I’ve posted before about a name for DS but nothing seems right. Anyway DH suggested Alan as a joke, and I actually like it!. I’m a big fan of names that everyone knows but just aren’t used anymore, is Alan acceptable? And if it isn’t are there any similar names that are acceptable?

I do t know any little Alan's just as I do t know any Gary's or Colin's. I think it's a bit dated, but not dated about to revive.

ConsiderHerWaysAndOthers · 12/09/2018 19:00

Well it definitely fits the bill of name that everyone knows but isn’t used. And if he wants to fit in with all the bloody Albert/Alfred/Albie/Alfies when he’s older then he can always go by Al! Plus the idea of a toddler called Alan makes me giggle in an oh so cute kind of way.

Heavystream · 12/09/2018 19:02

That’s exactly what I think, I just think a baby Alan would be so adorable!. And he could always be Ali if he wants it shortended. I can’t believe I’m really considering naming DS Alan!

I quite like it!

Nesssie · 12/09/2018 19:04

I like Albie

Cosmoa · 12/09/2018 19:04

Haha my Dad is called Alan and me and my sister were laughing ours heads off at the idea of looking at a newborn and saying "Awwwwh, baby Alan" 😂

Not taking the piss.. Just thought it's funny as we had only recently discussed this. But he's our Dad so it's gonna seem weird to us.

FuckyDuzz · 12/09/2018 19:05

Ha funnily enough there was a little Alan in my doctors the other day

Tbh I really really wouldn’t though, I don’t think it was a nice name even when it was popular, much less now

Heavystream · 12/09/2018 19:05

At least I’m not alone in liking it! It’s the only name that I genuinely feel like is the one. I can’t really see what’s wrong with it tbh. Other than the odd giggle

Oh and my Dad also gets called Ali by my Mum.

And his Dad (my grandad) was called Albie ❤️

Aprilshowersnowastorm · 12/09/2018 19:06

Sorry but makes me think Bambi isn't so bad after all.
(other thread!)

SilverLinings2014 · 12/09/2018 19:08

What about Alaric? Was on my list for DS; I liked Ric as a shortening bit Al works too.

Galerina · 12/09/2018 19:09

Maybe Allen would work? It's just the 70s connotations though really? If you just listen to the sound it's lovely.

Go for it!

BertrandRussell · 12/09/2018 19:14

Go for it. Names go round in circles. Alan will cone found again. You can be at the start.

Moominfan · 12/09/2018 19:15

Must be due a come back, lots of Harry's, Georges, franks ect. Recently came across a toddler called Keith

BertrandRussell · 12/09/2018 19:16

There were over 300 last year so he won't be the only one in the country!

Heavystream · 12/09/2018 19:16

I’m gonna ask DH what he thinks. I think the sound is really lovely!

I know three little Erics, and that’s such a middle aged name to me. But you get used to it. I actually agree with you — Alan has a nice sound.

StripyDeckchair · 12/09/2018 19:20

I don't think there's anything wrong with it and I think it could be cute for a baby/toddler.

Alec, Alban or Andrew as alternatives? Or Amias or Alonzo - a bit more unusual but both great names I think.

Heavystream · 12/09/2018 19:21

I think I might end up having a baby called Alan!

OP posts:
EdWinchester · 12/09/2018 19:23

Noooo! You can't call a baby Alan.

Classic old-man names came back into vogue because they are just that - classic.

But Alan belongs in a 1960's vault along with Colin, Dennis, Nigel and Brian. Just awful.

Heavystream · 12/09/2018 19:24

I mean I quite like Colin, Dennis and Brian as well!. I have a DS called John so maybe it’s just my taste to go for middle aged names!. I do have an Arthur and Lorcan as well though

thewinehasgonetomyhead · 12/09/2018 19:27

I also like Allen!

Fwend · 12/09/2018 19:28

I like it, and I think you're just ahead of the name curve.

Maybe he'll be friends with Victoria Coren-Mitchell's little girl Barbara! Same style. Smile

Jagblue · 12/09/2018 19:28

My H is called Stephen and I love his name very popular back in the 60's.
Alan it's nice. All names come back.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/09/2018 19:28

Alan is a fab name. My dad was an Alan named after Alan Ladd Grin
