I’ve posted before about a name for DS but nothing seems right. Anyway DH suggested Alan as a joke, and I actually like it!. I’m a big fan of names that everyone knows but just aren’t used anymore, is Alan acceptable? And if it isn’t are there any similar names that are acceptable?

I like it too. Andrew is my favourite 'A' name but Alan is good too.

AnyaMoondial · 12/09/2018 19:32

I really like it Smile

Singlenotsingle · 12/09/2018 19:33

Alan (Allen?) Carr
Alan Shearer
Alan Partridge
Alan Titchmarsh
Alan Rickman

It's a fine name.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 12/09/2018 19:34

Alan will never come back round! Like Jason, Nigel or Darren won't.

SunshineAllTheWhile · 12/09/2018 19:36

A toddler named Keith! Grin

Nellyelora · 12/09/2018 19:37

I quite like it. When he's in his mid-20s there will be lots of little Alan's and he'll be supercool

Heavystream · 12/09/2018 19:38

I think we’re gonna go for Alan!

I taught an Alain and I’ve taught a Colin. Every time his name came up with colleagues though someone commented on naming a baby Colin.
John is my favourite boy’s name but I feel it’s deffo more classic/timeless than Alan.

BertrandRussell · 12/09/2018 19:39

That's what they said about the name my mother was desperate to call me. She was laughed at, told it was too old fashioned and would never be OK. That I would be teased and bullied. The name? Emily!

Singlenotsingle · 12/09/2018 19:39

Better than all these trendy new names, surely? I know a Cosmo, a Quba and a JJ. What sort of names are those!?

IggyAce · 12/09/2018 19:40

Nothing wrong with Alan, I know a Colin who is now 9 but don’t know any young Alan’s.

Goostacean · 12/09/2018 19:41

I know one Alan. He’s about 30 and a total hottie. So the association depends on who you know...!

thecatsleftpaw · 12/09/2018 19:42

I prefer Allen, but also like Alan.

I didn't realise I liked it until your thread Grin

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 12/09/2018 19:42

Baby Dave 🤣

Justkeeprollingalong · 12/09/2018 19:42

Great name and Al is a great shortening.

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 12/09/2018 19:43

I know an Alan and an Alain, both aged 4

Hogtini · 12/09/2018 19:44

What about Alyn? Welsh version?

Biscuitsneeded · 12/09/2018 19:44

I like Alan too (mind you, I have a Bill....)

I also like Nicholas and Stephen. And John!

userabcname · 12/09/2018 19:45

I don't see why not. Also names like Dennis and Jason have already gained in popularity in the last decade or so judging from our recent intake of year 7s....makes a change from the never-ending parade of Toms, Henrys and Joes so I like it!

iklboo · 12/09/2018 19:47

Like Jason, Nigel or Darren won't.

There's two Jasons and a Darren in DS(12)'s sports club.

Alyn or Alain are good as well.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 12/09/2018 19:48

Is there really? Hmm Grin

CocoLoco87 · 12/09/2018 19:54

I like it. I think of Thunderbirds but they're basically superheroes so what an F.A.B name Grin

leccybill · 12/09/2018 19:54

I teach a Ronald and a Bernard. Love 'em both! Alan is great and I love Al as a nickname - go for it!

iklboo · 12/09/2018 19:55

Is there really? Hmm

Yes there is.

holasoydora · 12/09/2018 19:58

I like it. It's not just a 60s/70s name. My great uncle Alan, whom I never met, was an RAF pilot.

There was a super cool but in my school called Alan. In fact at my school, which had lots of indie kids, the less cool your name was the more cool your name was!

DD has a less common but classic girls name which was super popular in the 70s. There were a few raised eyebrows and she sticks out a bit in a class of Ellas and Tillys but I like it. And it brings back nice memories for me as a 70s child.

I like Ali as a nickname by the way.
