I’ve posted before about a name for DS but nothing seems right. Anyway DH suggested Alan as a joke, and I actually like it!. I’m a big fan of names that everyone knows but just aren’t used anymore, is Alan acceptable? And if it isn’t are there any similar names that are acceptable?

Super cool boy

Heavystream · 12/09/2018 19:59

What middle names are good with Alan?. We like Douglas but not sure if it goes with it. We have a one syllable last name and pretty much everything goes with it

I like it..

I also love Colin as a name I didn't grow up in the UK so do not have the connections others have or it. Additionally all the Colins I have met have been utterly delightful people helping my " liking" the name.

@GreatDuckCookery Ds age 16 has spend year 7 -10 with a Jason in his year. So not too far out that a Darren would be there too. In the case of the Jason we know I know he is named after a uncle who passed away however I don't mind it as a name.

Alan Douglas is great IMO.

I do like family names for middlenames though is there anything from either grandparents ?

TroysMammy · 12/09/2018 20:02

I quite like the thought of a little baby Alan wearing a knitted tank top. Adorable.

Heavystream · 12/09/2018 20:02

The remaining family names we have are David, Melvyn or Neil

I love Alan Douglas!! Sounds fab. My DC has a pretty retro name from that era too.

Dljlr · 12/09/2018 20:06

Alan over Melvyn every time!

dontcallmelen · 12/09/2018 20:06

David goes nicely with Alan, baby Alan is fab.

FranKatzenjammer · 12/09/2018 20:07

There are quite a few Polish boys around called Alan- I like the name.

greendale17 · 12/09/2018 20:08

All names don’t come back.

Alan is a crap name

Singlenotsingle · 12/09/2018 20:11

Melvyn reminds me of Melvyn Hayes, the little camp guy in "it ain't half hot Mum"

chewbacca83 · 12/09/2018 20:23

My husband is Italian and he has an obsession with the name Barry! He thinks all Barrys are nice and it's a lovely name haha. I can't get my head around a baby Barry at all haha. I actually like Alan though 😀

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 12/09/2018 20:27

I prefer Andrew to Alan, and it's really cool to be called Drew as a teen. I don't think 'Al' will ever sound cool.

Inmyownlittlecorner · 12/09/2018 20:28

There’s an Alan in my DDs year 1 class!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 12/09/2018 20:38

That's very strange that there's two Jason's and a Darren in the same sports club.

I haven't heard of a boy being called Jason for about 35 years, let alone two of them and with a Darren 🧐

lapuslazuli · 12/09/2018 20:39

I'd prefer Melvin (not too keen on it being spelled with 'y')

sproutsandparsnips · 12/09/2018 20:39

Alun or Aled?

LynetteScavo · 12/09/2018 20:45

I do know a child Alan...apparently it works in English and Spanish.

It's not awful.

A few years ago I posted on a baby name thread that Marvin wasn't that great...I've changed my mind about Marvin, and I my change my number d about Alan.

Oh, and I went to school with a good looking Alain. He pulled it off well.

auntyflonono · 12/09/2018 20:45

Alan Laurence
Alan Christopher
Alan James
Alan George

Mokepon · 12/09/2018 20:46

I know an 11 yo Alan.
If you like it, use it.
It's a perfectly decent name.
I know several cool Als. But short for Alasdair or Alexander not Alan Smile.

Heavystream · 12/09/2018 20:49

I do really like Alan James! He could be AJ aswell if he ends up not liking Alan.

MikeUniformMike · 12/09/2018 20:49

I really like the name Alan.
Not keen on Colin but Dennis and Brian are good.
I also like Philip.

MikeUniformMike · 12/09/2018 20:51

Alun is nice but will be pronounced Alan and will look like he has parents who can't spell. Alun is pronounced Al-in.

MikeUniformMike · 12/09/2018 20:52

I like Douglas too.
Alan Douglas Stream and Alan Stream sound good.
