My OH is much more safe and traditional than me in choosing a name for our soon to be ds. I like traditional biblical names too but also would like something a little 'special' and not massively popular... basically the moon on a stick that everyone wants!

Names that have been favourites for me so far:

August
Art (I don't like Arthur)
Ellis

OH likes:

Joseph
Albert
Alexander

If dd has been a 'surprise' boy at delivery she'd have been called Joseph. I feel like it's a little safe but do like it, but I also feel like it belongs to my last pregnancy with her IYKWIM!?! I like Albert but don't like the nn Albie, I like 'Bert' but know that we as parents will have very little to do with nn once he is at school.

Our dd has an apparent MN 'fad' name, when we named her in 2016 I hadn't ever known any children with her name but it seems to be gaining in popularity.

Can anyone suggest something that may help us meet half way? Thank you

Please don’t call him August!

Ellis and Alexander are probably the nicest out of your list. What about Alexei (not sure how to spell it for a boy!) as a compromise?

I sit next to an Alexei at work, though he is French so I assume it’s a French name if that makes any difference?

StuckInTheMiddleWithJude · 25/08/2018 07:47

@sexnotgender what is it you don't like about August?

We'd be happy with an easy to pronounce French name. Alexi (I believe) is spelt the same in both the masculine and feminine forms. Saying that, I don't like it at all. But thanks for your suggestion.

Don't call him August.
What about Jonah or Joel if you like Joseph but feel it's the name of the previous pregnancy?

IVEgotthePOWER · 25/08/2018 07:49

Prefer Ellis and Alexander. Also like the suggestion of Joel.

StuckInTheMiddleWithJude · 25/08/2018 07:50

@wizzler what is it that you do not like about August?

I'm not keen on Jonah. Joel I like but our next door neighbour is called Joel so we wouldn't use that.

Sorry I just find it a bit odd for a boy. I guess I think of it as a girls name?
Maybe it’s just me.

sexnotgender · 25/08/2018 07:51

Elliot?

StuckInTheMiddleWithJude · 25/08/2018 07:53

I should say August, Art and Ellis have all been vetoed by OH. I am still keen on August but it's looking unlikely we can use it.

If I shouldn't call my son August, can you add why too please?

OP posts:
SoyDora · 25/08/2018 07:56

August is not a nice word to my ear, let alone a nice name.

toomanyeastereggsurghh · 25/08/2018 07:57

Really don’t like August - reminds me of Augustus gloop from Charlie and choc factory.
Don’t like Art but do like Arthur
I really like Ellis.

From your Dh’s list I like Alexander although very popular. Joseph is just dull and I’ve never liked Albert (although Bertie is quite cute).

What about Xander, v similar to Alexander but less popular?

sexnotgender · 25/08/2018 07:57

Gabriel
Rowan is on our list
As is Francis

ChellySmuff · 25/08/2018 07:57

I quite like August, with the nn Gus, but it does put me in mind of Augustus Gloop

StuckInTheMiddleWithJude · 25/08/2018 07:57

@sexnotgender thank you. We do like Elliot, I think we discounted it primarily because we have an elephant foot stall that is 'called' Elliot (and known as that to our dd - so that put us off. I also looked after a very very unwell child called Elliot for a long time which makes me think of him.)

I think of Augustus when I think of the name August for a boy so my connotations would be very masculine /roman emperors etc. So that's interesting to hear you find it feminine.

Goodness, your oh has much better taste in names!

August is horrid for boy or girl. As would be Augusta or Auguste.

Ricekrispie22 · 25/08/2018 07:58

Dominic
Alfred (Alfie and Freddie are both nice)
Barnabas
Gideon
Theodore
Elliot
Noah
Reuben

StuckInTheMiddleWithJude · 25/08/2018 07:58

@ChellySmuff we both like Gus as a nn. I think of Augustas Gloop too but I kind of like that 😊😬🤭

Quangot · 25/08/2018 07:59

Angus
Elliott
Nathaniel
Peter
Adam
David
Saul
Vincent
Dylan
Alistair
Felix
Matthew
Isaac
Alfred

StuckInTheMiddleWithJude · 25/08/2018 07:59

@MrsBertBibby any suggestions to add or you'd just like to insult my name preferences? 🤷‍♀️

StuckInTheMiddleWithJude · 25/08/2018 08:00

@sexnotgender I really like Rowan (and it has a loose family connection) but unfortunately it was also vetoed by OH.

OP posts:
sexnotgender · 25/08/2018 08:00

Isaac?

StuckInTheMiddleWithJude · 25/08/2018 08:02

@Quangot thank you. I really like Isaac. I think OH said it was 'too jewish' but I think I'll revisit it with him.

OP posts:
toomanyeastereggsurghh · 25/08/2018 08:02

Roman
Xander
Jude
Rafferty
Elijah

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 25/08/2018 08:03

Your DH has better taste. def no to August & Ellis

StuckInTheMiddleWithJude · 25/08/2018 08:04

Thanks @Ricekrispie22 I like Elliott from your list. We have a few reasons we discounted it but maybe we need to revisit it.

The other names on your list are mostly names of friends children.

SuperstarDJ · 25/08/2018 08:04

I think August is an awful name. If you like Gus as a nn what about Magnus?

I like Albert from your DH’s list and Bertie is a cute nn.
