My OH is much more safe and traditional than me in choosing a name for our soon to be ds. I like traditional biblical names too but also would like something a little 'special' and not massively popular... basically the moon on a stick that everyone wants!

Names that have been favourites for me so far:

August
Art (I don't like Arthur)
Ellis

OH likes:

Joseph
Albert
Alexander

If dd has been a 'surprise' boy at delivery she'd have been called Joseph. I feel like it's a little safe but do like it, but I also feel like it belongs to my last pregnancy with her IYKWIM!?! I like Albert but don't like the nn Albie, I like 'Bert' but know that we as parents will have very little to do with nn once he is at school.

Our dd has an apparent MN 'fad' name, when we named her in 2016 I hadn't ever known any children with her name but it seems to be gaining in popularity.

Can anyone suggest something that may help us meet half way? Thank you

I think Benedict is really nice OP!

From your first post, Alexander and Joseph are really nice. But I like fairly traditional names.

Others from my favourites:

Ethan
Daniel
Felix
Anthony
Zachary
Samuel
Robin

August really isnt great. To me it looks like it should be Augustus but is missing a bit. I think it can be hard to explain why you don't like a particular name - for me a lot of the time it's just a strong gut feeling of 'just no'.

Frosty6611 · 25/08/2018 09:51

Do you like Alexander if shortened to xander? I think that’s really nice

sexnotgender · 25/08/2018 09:57

I know im not the OP but I really hate Xander, no idea why!

StuckInTheMiddleWithJude · 25/08/2018 10:00

@Frosty6611 @sexnotgender yes also not keen on Xander

@Narya I don't like Zachary, I like Zachariah though and Zach as a nn. OH felt it was 'too much' though

@StuckInTheMiddleWithJude I would pronounce it as Kay-Leb.

Benedict was fairly popular one at one private school I worked at. (I say fairly, but this includes former students from 1930s to current students, and it was just common enough for me to be like, oh ok that's a thing). I like it though, and I kind of like the fact you can call him Ben and everyone will assume it's for Benjamin but it isn't. A bit like how Will Smith's name isn't William, it's Willard.

I don't associate Jared with romcom bad boys, but maybe I haven't seen enough of them?! The first thing to come to mind is Jared Leto in My So Called Life. Although his character was called Jordan and I've seen him in plenty of other things so not sure why that one sticks!

unicornchaser · 25/08/2018 10:17

I like Ellis, Elliott and Alexander the best out of all suggested.

Do not like August. It is a month of the year and I can only think a child would get teased over it. I don't think months should be used as names so that goes for January, April, May, June etc also. Plenty of actual names to choose from in my opinion.

MikeUniformMike · 25/08/2018 10:18

Joseph or Alexander with Ellis as a mn.

Sophronia · 25/08/2018 10:29

I actually like August, not sure why it’s so unpopular on here!

MoreHairyThanScary · 25/08/2018 10:29

Amos possible nn Moss ( my dgdad's name) traditional but quite contemporary too!

ReginaPhalange89 · 25/08/2018 11:23

Sorry but August and Art and pretty awful. Not names in my opinion. August is a month, and if anything sounds like a girls name. Art is just strange If it's not short for Arthur

I like a lot of other names that have been suggested, Isaac, Alexander, Reuben, Joshua , Joseph, Samuel

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 25/08/2018 11:35

Gulliver (Gilly)
Titus
Roderick (Rod, Roddy)
Saul

everythingsgoingtobealright · 25/08/2018 12:35

I'm also not keen on August.
Gus reminds me of the mouse from Cinderella.
I prefer Artie than Art.

Jacob, Joss, Rueben, Max, Luke, Tobias, Elijah.

ShackUp · 25/08/2018 12:36

I've got a Freddie and Bertie. Alfred and Albert.

MumUnderTheMoon · 25/08/2018 12:54

What about family names but slightly altered so they are meaningful to you eg my dd is Kara after my mum who is Karen both names are derived from Katherine. Or is there a family surname that you would like to honour? Frankly I think August is lovely I quite like auggie as a nickname.

StuckInTheMiddleWithJude · 25/08/2018 14:17

Thanks all, have just managed to catch up now dd is having her nap.

I'm not put off August but have some definite other options to mull over so that's been really useful.

Baby's middle name will be James so I don't need suggestions for that thank you (my brothers name.) I don't have a very large family and no male relatives from my fathers side I'd want to honour. My gd died last year and was called Geoffrey which I like but not enough to use it. I would have considered it for an second mn but it'd be way too much with a double barrelled surname.

My OH's grandfather was called Joseph which is one of the reasons we'd chosen it last time.

I don't know, it's difficult

Your DH has vetoed August anyway hasn’t he? So it’s a non starter.

StuckInTheMiddleWithJude · 25/08/2018 14:53

@SoyDora he was considering it but now said he doesn't think he's keen. I have overall naming rights though as I'm growing the baby (his words) although obviously I'd like to find a name we both love for this dc as we do our dds name.

PortsmouthNH · 25/08/2018 15:20

August is a girl's name to me.

Augustus would be the male version.

StuckInTheMiddleWithJude · 25/08/2018 15:24

@PortsmouthNH 3 baby girls named it in 2016 vs 26 boys. According to dark greener. Interesting though.

Thanks @Ozgirl01 we seem to be in the minority. Some nice suggestions.

Belindabauer · 25/08/2018 15:27

Joseph is a lovely name.

Knittedfairies · 25/08/2018 15:30

Nathaniel?

WhereIsBlueRabbit · 25/08/2018 15:32

I absolutely love Joseph! Would have been number one choice when I was pregnant but DP vetoed it.

Isaac is also a great name and for what it's worth, the only association I've ever heard people make is Isaac Newton.

Ellis is quite unusual - I only know one.

Alexander is great.

I'm not keen on August personally - it reminds me of Augustus Gloop from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Grin. How about Angus, with Gus as a nickname?

Names I like which are classic but not that common so may just work are Felix, Dominic, Edmund, Louis, Sebastian and Thomas (not so popular with little ones now). I also love Samuel.

How about something like Barnaby?

motortroll · 25/08/2018 16:03

I love August!
