My OH is much more safe and traditional than me in choosing a name for our soon to be ds. I like traditional biblical names too but also would like something a little 'special' and not massively popular... basically the moon on a stick that everyone wants!

Names that have been favourites for me so far:

August
Art (I don't like Arthur)
Ellis

OH likes:

Joseph
Albert
Alexander

If dd has been a 'surprise' boy at delivery she'd have been called Joseph. I feel like it's a little safe but do like it, but I also feel like it belongs to my last pregnancy with her IYKWIM!?! I like Albert but don't like the nn Albie, I like 'Bert' but know that we as parents will have very little to do with nn once he is at school.

Our dd has an apparent MN 'fad' name, when we named her in 2016 I hadn't ever known any children with her name but it seems to be gaining in popularity.

Can anyone suggest something that may help us meet half way? Thank you

August sounds like a male name to me but .... not really appealing. For some reason it reminds me of a) Ashley Wilkes and b) Angel Clare. I love Jared - I only know two; one late forties and the other 18. Ellis is nice; how about Elijah? Someone upthread mentioned Bertram as a "Bert" name - love that.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 25/08/2018 18:28

Definitely Joseph.

MikeUniformMike · 25/08/2018 18:30

Augustine is nice. nn Gus.

kenandbarbie · 25/08/2018 18:33

I much prefer your dh choices

SinkGirl · 25/08/2018 18:53

I have a large group of friends with toddlers, most have twins so lots of toddler names. Everyone who thought they were giving an unusual name, that name has ended up replicated in the group at least once, sometimes more. You’d be surprised how many toddlers I know called Florence and Luca.

For boys names, the only ones that aren’t replicated are James, Noah, Jacob and Joshua. Two of those are my twins and I’m so glad we went with them.

August is just not a good idea IMO. It’s all a bit too grandiose / Roman emperor for a child. It is a bit obnoxious.

Jethro?

SadMummy85 · 25/08/2018 19:24

Joseph James 'JJ' - that's pretty cool?

Flamingosnbears · 25/08/2018 19:58

Joseph Ellis - it combines both of your favourite names...

Tallie12 · 31/08/2018 17:59

OP I think we have similar taste as I love August and Ellis! My DH also likes more traditional names!

My number one name at the minute is Isaac. I also like Caleb, Roman, Finn, Reuben,Everett and Sullivan. Also warming to Tobias nn Toby.

Lucy1103 · 31/08/2018 18:55

Not sure if it would suit your DH’s tastes but a name like Linus could be a compromise?

WaxOnFeckOff · 31/08/2018 19:04

Austin
Marcus
Miles
Guy
Edgar
Piers/Peter
Saul

Touchnotthiscat · 31/08/2018 19:09

Jesse
Micah
Gabriel
Solomon
Silas

Meltedicicle · 31/08/2018 19:11

Not sure if anyone has already suggested it but do you like Conrad or Silas? Both nice with James as a middle name. I’m afraid I’m in the ‘not August’ camp too. It just sounds silly as a name to me, sorry, plus I associate months for names with girls (April, may, June) etc

MrsReader · 31/08/2018 19:23

Can't believe all the August hate! It's on my list too OP. I liked it when I saw the film 'August Rush'.

I also like Ellis. I don't like your husbands choices- a bit boring for my liking.

Dread to think of the comments I'd get with my list!

moredoll · 31/08/2018 21:18

Joseph.

August has grown on me a little bit as I've read through the thread, but it's the name of Mark Zuckerberg's second child and I'm pretty sure she's a girl. Tbh it's a bit
try hard.

Shadow1234 · 08/09/2018 18:21

I love ellis, but my son has 3 ellis' at his school and they are
All girls!! Definitely more of a unisex name now than a more
Masculine one

What about elliot as an alternative or Elijah??
