Any thoughts? We won't be finding out the sex and we have a boys name picked. Have one DD already

I like it.

ProseccoPoppy · 16/07/2018 16:21

I know an 18 year old Piper (friend’s DD). She always introduces herself as Pip though and I think a lot of people think/assume she’s Philippa. My friend is fine with that - whatever works, was never precious about a shortening or whatever, but worth knowing as I can imagine some people wouldn’t like Pip as a nn. I don’t dislike it as a name - a little too out there for me to consider but not too bad. Always reminds me of Charmed.

MikeUniformMike · 16/07/2018 16:28

I'm not keen. Makes me think of Piper Alpha.
The actor Piper Laurie played Carrie's mum.

EsmeJay · 16/07/2018 16:30

I love the name Piper 😍 although it reminds me of Orange is the new black

Flicketyflack · 16/07/2018 16:31

Gillian Anderson's daughter is called Piper!

Bizarre fact Grin

xxxParisexxx · 16/07/2018 16:31

I liked the name when I watched orange is the new black lol, just didn't know how out there it was and people's opinions xx

I like it in a sense, but, perhaps due to my age, I remember Piper Alpha all too well and that's the first thing that came to mind. Pip is a nice nickname, though, and I'm sure for younger generations (outside of the industry and large parts of Scotland) the oil rig is not the first thing they will think of.

xxxParisexxx · 16/07/2018 16:38

What's piper alpha?

Eventhough plenty of people (like me!) Would never of heard of the disaster?

Fieau · 16/07/2018 16:47

Love the name and would never have thought of the Piper Alpha association. If you don't live in Scotland I think it's fine.

xxxParisexxx · 16/07/2018 16:48

No, don't live in Scotland, England x

Sorry for the unfortunate cross post.

eyycarumba · 16/07/2018 16:53

Makes me think of 'Charmed', I like it - I also like another PP's comment about it being shortened to Pip

Piper Alpha was the first thing I thought of tbh. I know two Pipers and they are both nice girls but are from neddish backgrounds. It depends how your other DD's name balances with it.

MikeUniformMike · 16/07/2018 17:01

It also makes me think of pipes. Drains, ducts etc. And it's a surname.
I'd avoid.

Cbeebiesrehab · 16/07/2018 17:02

What is a neddish background out of interest?
It’s not my style of name but I like it...although I too had never heard of the offshore disaster.

xxxParisexxx · 16/07/2018 17:06

DDs name is Macie

OliviaStabler · 16/07/2018 17:09

I like it. Reminds me of Charmed.

PeonyTruffle · 16/07/2018 17:26

I really like it OP

PeonyTruffle · 16/07/2018 17:26

Also never heard of the disaster

YouCantBeSirius · 16/07/2018 17:27

A "ned" is basically the Scottish version of "chav"

BevBrook · 16/07/2018 17:29

My first thought was Gillian Anderson's daughter as well! There was an X-Files episode called Piper Maru. I always find it funny that she named her daughter after an episode (I assume!) I have heard of Piper Alpha and remember it happening but I would not associate it with the name Piper at all.
