Any thoughts? We won't be finding out the sex and we have a boys name picked. Have one DD already

My son goes to nursery with a piper. I think it's fresh and beautiful

xxxParisexxx · 16/07/2018 17:31

It's probably the only name we both really like and agree on lol x

Piper Alpha was my first thought, too and always will be. My XH was involved and was never the same again and we had been married less than a year. I am astounded that you have never heard of it.

madcatladyforever · 16/07/2018 17:36

Sorry absolutely hate it, it's a typical american far fetched name.

Disfordarkchocolate · 16/07/2018 17:37

It's the name of my dog. I saw a lovely little girl being called it in a shop I was very confused. I do like it though.

theveryhighlife · 16/07/2018 17:38

I don't usually like 'American' names at all, (too much of a snob) but I think piper is quite sweet.

hendricksy · 16/07/2018 17:38

It was on my list when dd was born 15 years ago. We settled with Willow .. I like to think I stated a trend 🤣🤣

xxxParisexxx · 16/07/2018 17:43

Didn't realise it was seen as an American name either. I'm 29 so maybe why I havnt heard of the disaster

Love it! My oldest DD is Piper or Pippi (Longstockings) as a nn and it suits her. It’s not super popular where we are (NZ) and I haven’t met any other Pipers. I’m American though so maybe conditioned to like those ‘far fetched’ names Grin

MakeItStopNeville · 16/07/2018 17:46

I know 4 Piper’s (am in US) and all of them are really lovely people. So yes from me!

HouseworkIsASin10 · 16/07/2018 17:49

I love Piper.

I was around for Piper Alpha but that wouldn't bother me at all. Piper has always been a name in it's own right.

Glumglowworm · 16/07/2018 18:32

BevBrook they named the episode after her daughter not the other way around en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piper_Maru

My first thought was Orange is the New Black (which I love and I’m currently rewatching ready for the new season). Piper is an annoying character in it though IMO

Lottie35 · 16/07/2018 18:47

Horrible, just plain and simple ugly!!!

lemonnmeringuepie · 16/07/2018 19:08

Gorgeous name!

lemonnmeringuepie · 16/07/2018 19:10

Ps I had never heard of Piper Alpha til I googled from this thread - I'm in my early twenties so if you do name her Piper I doubt school friends will make the connection

BevBrook · 16/07/2018 19:15

Oh OK, Glum - I thought she had her daughter later on but obviously not!

daisypond · 16/07/2018 19:16

It's not my style of name at all - (too surnamey) - but I rather like it. I do think of Piper Alpha, though.

LolaDolly · 16/07/2018 19:17

Not for me. It sounds industrial.

NoFucksImAQueen · 16/07/2018 19:48

I like it

RavenWings · 16/07/2018 19:56

Never heard of the disaster either. I like the name Piper. I think it works for a woman of all ages.

Here's a quick list of names linked to natural disasters that people still use: Rita, Andrew, Nina, Maria...I would have no concerns about a Piper. Plenty of precedent there.

Katrina is the only name I can think of that has had a serious drop in popularity, but variations of it are surviving just fine.

Sessy19 · 16/07/2018 20:15

Despite having heard of the Piper Alpha disaster, I would never associate the name of a child, a sweet girl, with an exploding oil rig.

I also like the name Carrie and would not associate it with a horror title.

If it’s a name your OH and you both like, I think it ‘fits’ with Macie in terms of style. And if you were to ask enough rude people, they’ll force their opinion on you unthinkingly to make you feel bad about liking a name. Go for it 😊

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 16/07/2018 20:17

I like it and it's great with Macie.

Kate123cl · 16/07/2018 20:19

Nice unless you're from the South WestWink

DramaAlpaca · 16/07/2018 20:21

I hate it, it's not my style at all.

FlowerPotMum · 16/07/2018 20:21

I have a Piper. I'm neither a chav ( or a Ned) nor an American liking 'far fetched' names 😂
I've had nothing but compliments on it, she's a little bit older and goes by Pip, never Pipes!.
