How weird is this name? But I love it!

OK, I know it's 'unusual' to say the least but I absolutely love the name Jura for a girl. I'm 33 weeks pregnant and am trying to gather names. So far, I'm unisinpired but my dp and I love the name Jura (we love the island itself and the whisky Blush).

So what I'm asking is, if you met a baby Jura, would you think weird or nice?

I love it!

Jura is shaped like a boob though.

This made me laugh Grin But I think the Paps of Jura would be more of a funny joke than a deal breaker for the name... I'm sure it'll give her a laugh when she's older! Reminds me of a trip I went on to Cairnpapple Hill - stone booby hill. We Scots are such a literary people.

I also love the suggestions of Sula and Afton.

FairfaxAikman · 11/07/2018 09:53

I love it. The only Jura I know is a dog but that wouldn't put me off.

Loads of nice names in the Scottish islands.

SomeKnobend · 11/07/2018 09:56

I would think "juror".

Bloodyfucksake · 11/07/2018 09:58

I know 2 Russian boys called Jura. Not sure if its short for anything. They are nice kids though!

Tefiti2 · 11/07/2018 10:01

It is a really beautiful and underused name! Go for it!

MariaMadita · 11/07/2018 10:12

I like it :)

Jura is also a lovely area in
Switzerland and France. (I grew up in Southern Germany so our parents often took us hiking/camping in the Jura hills...) There are also other regions called ....Jura in Germany.

It's also a (slightly colloquial but not disparaging) term for law in German. (Iura = Jura...)

Anyhow, I really like it :) it's a bit strange but also really lovely imo.

Susannach · 11/07/2018 13:19

Love it, and it works for a boy too so I’d go for it either way!

Hs2Issue · 11/07/2018 13:25

I quite like it as a name, however dcat's name is Talisker so may be a bit biased.

spiderlight · 11/07/2018 13:26

I like it (and the whiskey). We have a nephew called Talisker :)

iamawagama · 11/07/2018 13:51

My coffee machine is called a Jura. It's very snazzy.

I like it!

MikeUniformMike · 11/07/2018 13:52

Jurassic

TatianaLarina · 11/07/2018 14:01

It’s a départment of France, a bit like calling someone Surrey.

MikeUniformMike · 11/07/2018 14:12

or Lorraine

MikeUniformMike · 11/07/2018 14:13

Kent could be a child's name. Devon too.

Puzzletta · 11/07/2018 14:45

I know two Devons - one a girl, one a boy

ladycarlotta · 11/07/2018 16:17

I think it's nice! I knew a (Japanese) woman who named her baby Hibiki. She was always so pleased that I remembered his name, and I never had the heart to say it was because of the whiskey.

TatianaLarina · 11/07/2018 16:19

or Lorraine

Even worse!

primoestate · 11/07/2018 16:25

I like it, but my first thought is 'coffee machine'

Chinnyreckoning · 11/07/2018 16:31

I've taught one. Lovely girl and def no one called her durex or any such nonsense

Saisong · 11/07/2018 16:32

Might spelling it Jurah feminise it a bit? I like it.

youmeandconchitawurst · 11/07/2018 16:56

I quite like it but one of your previous posts suggests that you're in Scotland, so no. just no.

if it's a girl, it's like shoving a big sign on her back saying "bully me".

if she has wee tits some immature little gobshite will wind her up with it, and if she's of the Dolly Parton persuasion she's gubbed.

Just don't do it to her.

CrunchingIceCubes · 11/07/2018 21:09

I like it but said out loud it's a bit too similar to 'durex'

EggysMom · 11/07/2018 21:14

I'm going to call my next cat Talisker

Twenty-cough years ago, I named my pedigree Birmans Jura (boy) and Tallisker (girl).

NataliaOsipova · 11/07/2018 21:17

I like it but said out loud it's a bit too similar to durex

I thought "Durex" too... Blush

Haint · 11/07/2018 21:18

Hound no? Only me?
