How weird is this name? But I love it!

OK, I know it's 'unusual' to say the least but I absolutely love the name Jura for a girl. I'm 33 weeks pregnant and am trying to gather names. So far, I'm unisinpired but my dp and I love the name Jura (we love the island itself and the whisky Blush).

So what I'm asking is, if you met a baby Jura, would you think weird or nice?

My friends DS is Jura Smile.

PellyBay · 10/07/2018 20:33

It's beautiful. As is the island. But you can't! The Paps of Jura! They're pretty famous. Have you ever seen the island? Paps means Tits. Surely you know this...

A long time ago I worked as a tour guide in Scotland. One of our company legends was about an American girl called Bonnie Paps who took one of our tours with no idea that her surname was just as well-known in Scots as her first name. She certainly knew all about it by the end of the tour...

DramaAlpaca · 10/07/2018 20:34

I'm going to call my next cat Talisker Smile

TheNoseyProject · 10/07/2018 20:40

You could go for juno. You can’t use Sula ‘it’s a Bing thing’: m.youtube.com/watch?v=pu1mKwf6rv0

I am from Russia and Jura is a boys name over there. Russian version of George I think? I wasn't aware of the Scottish association but I do like it

afreshnewname · 10/07/2018 20:50

I like how it sounds, but it's a brand of whiskey sold in supermarkets so quite well known as that

WHAT91 · 10/07/2018 21:05

EstrellaDamn thanks for the other unusual suggestions. Lots of helpful ideas Flowers

DramaAlpaca firstly, great display name! I love Talisker and can't wait to get a pet to call it that! Lived only a couple of miles away for three years.

PellyBay I'm very aware of the paps of Jura, and that baby Jura may eventually grow to a woman where people may comment on her lovely paps of Jura. However, for many, this doesn't seem to be the first thing that jumps to mind.

But now you've mentioned Bonnie Paps as a name, I may need to rethink Grin

This may not matter to you, but have you checked out the meaning of the word 'Jura'? It's generally reckoned to mean 'Deer Island' . That's not a bad meaning at all- red deer are elegant and magnificent, and the island is lovely . And I expect you know the meaning anyway ....

GorgonLondon · 10/07/2018 21:08

WHAT I agree with you completely re. Laphroaig. As a DRINK, mind. Not a child!

WHAT91 · 10/07/2018 21:16

Gorgon oh aye, in drinks name only! Grin

In a Scottish accent if sounds nice. Yorkshire or Cockney not so much. So.. depends on where you're from.

Hamletina · 10/07/2018 21:25

Sounds like juror.

Which makes me think of the rural juror from 30 Rock - watch the clip of it on YouTube, and you might see the problem

Beamur · 10/07/2018 21:26

I like it.
DH is a bit Scottish on his fathers side and we have an island name in one of the kids names. My great aunt had the same name.
Jura is shaped like a boob though. Hence 'paps'. That wouldn't put me off though.

OlennasWimple · 10/07/2018 21:49

It's a lovely word, but only a name for a pet, sorry

HoratioNightboy · 10/07/2018 22:01

Nice choice!

Been in use in Scotland for about 200 years so not unknown as a forename. Mostly used for girls, but there are a few boys too, and for some reason is popular as a boy's middle name. So if you do have a boy then you can still use it! Smile

user1495884620 · 10/07/2018 22:02

I thought mountains as well. To be honest, I didn't know it was a scottish isle (but guessed from the mention of whisky!)

dappledsky · 10/07/2018 22:05

My friend’s little girl is called Jura, I think it’s lovely. Go for it!

villamariavintrapp · 10/07/2018 22:17

It’s also the covering of the brain and spinal cord. Spelt dura. I don’t really like it as a name..

YoucancallmeVal · 10/07/2018 22:58

I like it written down but in my accent it is more D'you ra which isn't as pretty. Maybe don't ever meet me so I can't mangle it?

EvilEdna1 · 10/07/2018 23:01

I know a baby girl called Jura. Named after the whiskey. No others have used it as a name. Not the worst name I have heard. When she gets to s condary they will call her Jurex though.

Ohyesiam · 10/07/2018 23:01

I’m not a lot better of weird names, but I really like Jura. It would be unusual, but still sound like a proper name.
I love Jura island too op. I’ve sat on the beach in front of Jura House and watched an otter fish for ages about 4 metered away from me.

GreenBrick · 10/07/2018 23:09

Yura is a very common name in Eastern Europe for a boy, (from Yuri). For me it’s very confusing for a girl as it’s such a male name, but I appreciate your area may have no issue with this

buttercup54321 · 10/07/2018 23:26

Jurassic

Queenofthedrivensnow · 10/07/2018 23:28

It's lovely

WHAT91 · 11/07/2018 07:30

florascotia2 yes, I love the meaning Smile almost as unusual as the name.

Thanks everyone for your honest opinions. It's a contender, that's for sure!
