Unusual but not weird names

Still searching for names. We would like something that isn't popular and unlikely to be in school with another. But nothing too weird that we spend the whole time telling people how to spell it/ pronounce it etc..

I have met precisely one Meriel. The only other one I have heard of was the daughter of an ambassador in Russia during the revolution.

I also like Valentina, as in Valentina Tereshkova. I think the first woman in space would be an ace person to be named after.

I've also only met one Jonquil.

I named my daughter Cassandra but shortened to Cassie

OhTheRoses · 09/07/2018 05:33

OP please don't use a name if you have to ask how it's pronounced. If you don't know chances are the child's classmates won't either and that must be grim. It will set her apart and make her feel awkward.

Sashh, a character in the Archers has a daughter called Meriel. She lives in NZ.

Couldn't agree more about the pronunciation point. It would be irritating to have Antigone constantly pronounced as three syllables with the stress on the first syllable like antifreeze instead of four with the stress on the second syllable.

We had Ariadne on our shortlist, which I still think is beautiful Artemis is also lovely.

@OhTheRoses there's not a chance in the world I will be choosing a name I have to ask how to pronounce myself!! Antigone is an awful name in my humble opinion 😊

@MikeUniformMike Ha otterly boggerly was the first thing DH said when I suggested Ottilie last name so that ones out!

Wonderful Greek tragedy though OP :)

What sort of names do you like though OP? I'm getting the vibe you may be more in the Tansy/Noah camp than the Merlin/Xanthe camp. Conrad/Eloise?

MariaMadita · 09/07/2018 08:13

Ottilie is lovely imo.

Imo similar names:
Odette, Elodie, Romilly, Octavia, Ottoline, Olympe, Vivienne, Verity, Lorelei, Evangeline, Dorothy, Coralie, Cleodie or Cecily.

PasstheStarmix · 09/07/2018 08:16

OP there are such a wude range of names in schools now. You will find that there will be another child with the same name somewhere around your ad at some point, unless you go for 'Weird'. My dc has a very unusual name and doesn't make top 1000 but there was still a girl whose name sounded so similar (albeit a south Asian version).
