So bigmouth OH told both our families our shortlist today at a BBQ. He's in the doghouse. The reaction was terrible especially to Vera which was my favourite. I know it's easy to say our baby our choice but the flak we got was so bad it's put us both off. I'm really upset. Would you honestly pick a name both families really hated ( my mum said it was like calling the baby Edna) and where do we go from here? I'm so mad I can't sleep and have just trawler another 5 name sites!

I think Vera is really pretty. They'll get used to it as it will just become 'your DC' to them when they hear it. I'd stick with it if you love it.

You could always call the title of the thread a Welsh name Cegdwpmawr. It's a mystical name that means just that.

Vera Lynn and Vera Brittain are both influential in regard to European history in the 20th century and 2018 is the perfect year to commemorate with new life.

If my Mum said something so rude, I'd be more inclined to use the name just to piss her off.

Luckily my family have more tact than that anyway.

My family all had opinions on all three of my names. They openly hated my eldest name but honestly I adore his name and they haven't said anything since he was born!

Which is great crazymum unless your OH is a total wimp.

I've always had baby names swirling around in my head. So many options.. but then we adopted and had the choice made for us!

DS name is not one that I would ever have picked and my family pulled faces at it... BUT it suits him so much and a couple of years on it is just him and we love him and his name..

I guess my point (eventually) is that family will grow to love the name because they love the child.

I think Vera is super. I also like: Verena. Vita. Vinca. But they're a different sort of vibe. Vanessa. Veronica?
