Bigmouth

So bigmouth OH told both our families our shortlist today at a BBQ. He's in the doghouse. The reaction was terrible especially to Vera which was my favourite. I know it's easy to say our baby our choice but the flak we got was so bad it's put us both off. I'm really upset. Would you honestly pick a name both families really hated ( my mum said it was like calling the baby Edna) and where do we go from here? I'm so mad I can't sleep and have just trawler another 5 name sites!

Vera means truth it really is lovely xx

falaffels · 01/07/2018 22:05

Love Vera.

Ignore them. They'll get over it!

FurryDogMother · 01/07/2018 22:05

My favourite aunt (born 1915) was Vera. I used to think of it as an 'old lady' name, but I think its time has come again, and I really like it.

runsmidgeOMG · 01/07/2018 23:40

I had an aunt Vera she died last year,
My cousin named her daughter after her whilst she was still alive, it meant the world to her !

Vera is beautiful

Thank you all so much. Just had a looong conversation with a very apologetic OH who promises to stay quiet from now on. He says he isn't keen on Vera anymore which has left me a little sad as I love it. His latest suggestion is Cherry which is a happy name I think but makes me think of strippers for some reason! I guess it's back to the drawing board. Thanks for the suggestions but none really grab me...especially Verify which I really dislikes. Worked with a horrible one.

Honor for a similar meaning?
Valerie (I LOVE this) for a similar sound?

I can't really say I like Cherry.

JaneJeffer · 02/07/2018 00:22

Bigmouth strikes again.

MadameJosephine · 02/07/2018 00:26

Vera is a gorgeous name, definitely duea comeback and I think it’ll become really popular like Ivy, Ada and Ida.

I also love Valerie and Audrey

Reaa · 02/07/2018 01:19

Cherry pronounced Chree or Cherry?

How about Eden or Meadow?

I love the name Electra but my DH said that was a strippers name.

PinkAvocado · 02/07/2018 01:29

Verity, as a pp said, is lovely!

MaitlandGirl · 02/07/2018 02:18

I love the name Vera, but then I’m biased as it’s my mums name. She’s coming up 80 and is one of the loveliest women I’ve ever met. Kind hearted, hard working, devoted to her family and an all round great person. Every time I hear of someone with the same name I hope they’ll turn out just like my mum.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 02/07/2018 07:03

Vera is as awful as Bertha and Phylis.
Do people like those too now?

GrumpySusan · 02/07/2018 07:17

I know a little Vera and it's unusual but she owns it. Also an Evelyn, Olive, Ada and Sylvia. Agree to keeping shortlists firmly to yourselves, stock response 'we're waiting til she's here'

butlerswharf · 02/07/2018 07:50

@househunthappening I thought exactly the same! Smile

MariaMadita · 02/07/2018 08:00

Cherry is really sweet but it isn't much more than that imo. (And I think there's a lot of teasing material / potentially unfortunate associations. Popping her cherry etc...)

Annora, Margot, Greta, Peggy, Alma, Cora, Edith, Esther, Ida, Vela, Viveca, Vita, Helena, Flora, Floretta nn Etta, Juno, Juniper, Clio, Daphne, Daisy, Clementine, Estelle, Sadie.

MariaMadita · 02/07/2018 08:02

Gloria?

Good luck finding the perfect name :)! (Too bad he doesn't like Vera anymore. It's really lovely imo)

Ginger1982 · 02/07/2018 09:44

I think Cherry is worse than Vera

hoping2018 · 02/07/2018 09:46

Sylvie?

FizzyGreenWater · 02/07/2018 11:01

Afraid I'd go MAD at him 'going off it' (aka being swayed by family) when it was HIS mistake in the first place!

I'd be - nope. It's Vera. Twas agreed.

His fault if his own actions have soured it a bit for him.

He liked the name. There's no change to that, just the stupid responses.

You shouldn't lose your favourite name because of that!

Cherry is just a nothing name. Bit silly.

MariaMadita · 02/07/2018 11:12

True. I like many Italian names (some of them really unusual in the UK) and I just know that MIL would hate them if she heard them before the LO was born...

(I I feel like she'd just be overjoyed to finally have a grandkid after the birth so wouldn't be too scathing).

But I really feel like your DH can't go off the name now / because of their reaction... Or else you'll be stuck knowing that your IL's had a huge role in naming the LO.

And I think you might end up resenting him and them in the case of name regret...

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 02/07/2018 11:16

Sounds like he's come to his senses.

louella99 · 02/07/2018 11:19

Hope you find something you both love. I like Vera (and lots of the other names suggested). Agree with PP who said grandparents have had their chance at naming babies! Currently 32 weeks pregnant and not giving anyone a sniff of a hint of names we like. MIL said 'you'll pick a nice name, you won't pick a name like Chardonnay'. I said 'we might! and if we do, you'll have to suck it up!!'

GahWhatever · 02/07/2018 11:26

FWIW I like Vera and Edna.
Whatever you call your daughter she will grow into it and it will just be who she is.
Go for something you and DH love and ignore the others. They'll soon associate the name with your DD rather than anyone else.

GahWhatever · 02/07/2018 11:28

Cherry is and anglicized version of Cherie which means beloved in French. Go with Cherie rather than Cherry if that's what you prefer.
