Alexandra shortened?

We have a baby Alexandra, we love the name and it really suits her

Inevitably friends and relatives are calling her Alex already but I quite like Ally instead (if it must be shortened!)

Would love to know which you prefer?

And OP clearly said she doesn’t mind what she chooses to be called or what her friends call her as she gets older.

You’re obviously just being argumentative (or not reading the thread properly) so I’m going to ignore you now. Have a great day.

I don’t think policing other people’s names for my children is necessary

But you chose to shorten your child's name. So obviously quite happy for other people to do the same. Some people don't want to. And until the child is old enough to decide whether they want the shortened nn nobody has the right or place to shorten it.

Battleax · 01/06/2018 15:24

Shura.

TatianaLarina · 01/06/2018 15:40

But you chose to shorten your child's name

Nope. Are you still thinking Alexandra is my DD?

My actual DD - we call her a dim at home, more of a pet name, her friends call her another dim, she uses her full name at school. If she wants to shorten that’s up to her.

And OP clearly said she doesn’t mind what she chooses to be called or what her friends call her as she gets older.

OP said nothing of the sort... but she seems quite laid back.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 01/06/2018 15:53

But had you chosen not to call her a diminutive of her name and your friends did shorten it would you have been fine with them ignoring you?

TatianaLarina · 01/06/2018 16:15

Sure, why not? I don’t see it as ‘ignoring’ me, it’s not my name.

Katjolo · 01/06/2018 16:16

Alex

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 01/06/2018 17:05

What do you see it as then?

MikeUniformMike · 01/06/2018 17:12

If you give a child a long name it will get shortened.
Amy, for example, is so long that it gets shortened to Ames, and Ian is so long that it becomes E. Yes really.
Ann, Kim, and Hugh become Annie, Kimmy and Hughie/Hugo.

If you want your child to be called Alexandra, great, it's a classic name but one day it will become Al/Ali/Alex/Lexi....
If that's a problem, pick a short version your happy with from the start.
Alex and Ally are both nice. OP is asking which would we choose.

auntyflonono · 01/06/2018 17:49

We have an Elizabeth, everyone started to call her Lizzie when she was a baby but a few months of cards and photos with Beth on soon changed the habit.

MikeUniformMike · 01/06/2018 19:02

Very sensible, aunty. I really like Beth short for Elizabeth.

daisypond · 01/06/2018 19:23

I prefer Alex to Ally. I think I'd also put Alexa and Lexie ahead of Ally.

Andthatsthat · 01/06/2018 19:28

I like any of the diminutives except Lexi.

MatildaLovesBooks · 01/06/2018 23:16

Ally is awful. I also don’t like Alex.
