Alexandra shortened?

We have a baby Alexandra, we love the name and it really suits her

Inevitably friends and relatives are calling her Alex already but I quite like Ally instead (if it must be shortened!)

Would love to know which you prefer?

I like Sandy, Sasha, Alex and Ally. Xandra/Zandra is a bit try-hard and Lexi doesn't roll off my tongue, if that helps. I'd stick to Alexandra at this stage unless you want her to be known by the short form.

TatianaLarina · 30/05/2018 17:03

Alex, Alexa, Ali and Za/Zsa are great. No-one really calls Alexandras Sasha ime outside Russia as it’s seen as a different name. Lexi is bloody awful and has now become a chav classic.

TheOriginalEmu · 30/05/2018 19:50

My friends daughter is Alexandria, she's always been known as Lex.

NearLifeExperience · 31/05/2018 01:20

I have an Alexandra.

We've always called her Ali (and still do), but everyone else calls her Alex. She'll call us up and say "Hi, it's Ali" but will refer to herself as Alex everywhere other than when she is back here.

That's the thing, OP, your little Alexandra may decide herself what she wants called.

teenybean · 31/05/2018 02:42

I've got an Alexandra & we call her Lexi or Lex, but she has now decided she wants to be called Alexandra & will not answer to anything else! I don't know any other Alexandra's, it's such a lovely name & there are so many nns for it.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 31/05/2018 04:42

Love Ally, Lexi, Sasha. Less keen on Alex.

ajandjjmum · 31/05/2018 09:36

That's the thing teenybean. They will derive their own nn's, and in the case of DD, it varies from group to group.

HollyGibney · 31/05/2018 10:14

I have an Alexandra. We call her both. She's Alex at school and Alex or Ally at home. I think nicknames just happen naturally mostly.

SleepingStandingUp · 31/05/2018 10:19

Can someone please explain the Sascha?

I think if you call her Ally puerile trend to follow and in a few years she'll decide for herself anyway

NearLifeExperience · 31/05/2018 10:39

Sascha/Sacha is an Eastern European diminutive of Alexander or Alexandra, Sleeping

Flamingosnbears · 31/05/2018 16:52

Ally by miles...

MadisonAvenue · 31/05/2018 16:56

I know an Alexandra who shortens her name to Xana, pronounced Shanna.

MerryDeath · 31/05/2018 16:59

you cannot dictate nicknames 😑 has anyone on the baby names board ever left their house

chocolatewine · 31/05/2018 18:19

In Greece it's sometimes shortened to Aleka

BitOutOfPractice · 31/05/2018 18:20

I like Lexy

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 31/05/2018 18:21

I'd put my foot down and insist on the full name personally. Alexandra is beautiful but I'm not keen on Lexi at all. Ally is ok.

LondonTheNovel · 31/05/2018 19:56

I love Alexandra and all its available nicknames - if you like the long version, tell people to use the long version, and let a nn develop within your own family (you, DH, DD).

TatianaLarina · 01/06/2018 09:38

I'd put my foot down and insist on the full name personally

Good luck with that. It won’t be up to you.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 01/06/2018 09:41

It definitely is up to me when they're young. I've done that with two of my dc that have names that regularly get shortened. After a few times of people doing it and me saying that we aren't shortening their names it stopped.

TatianaLarina · 01/06/2018 09:50

Only up until about 10. Then it’s out of your hands completely. What have you gained other than being weirdly controlling?

The people whose parents did that - it put them off their full name for life and they never used it again.

I changed mine to Alex when I went to senior school, my friends call/called me Alex, Ali, Al all of which my mother disliked but eventually adopted herself. DH calls me Zsa.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 01/06/2018 09:58

Weirdly controlling? What wanting my child to be called the name I gave them? GrinHmm

There's no way I would continue to call someone's child a shortened version of their name when they have made it clear they use the full version as that would be weirdly controlling Wink

TatianaLarina · 01/06/2018 10:00

Yep. Weirdly controlling.

Did the child made it clear or did you? You could just let your children make their own choices...

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 01/06/2018 10:02

The OP's child is a baby.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 01/06/2018 10:03

Oh and my dc have said they don't want their names shortened Smile

Greenandcabbagelooking · 01/06/2018 10:07
