Ellis & Cai proper welsh names or chavy?

I need a welsh boys name for DS3. My DH is welsh but never suggests anything. I'm English.

I want something shortish and that can be easily read by non welshies.

Are Cai & Ellis options or not really Welsh names ? Hmm

I quite like Euan / Ewan but is the welsh version Iuan ? As sure that would be said differently in welsh and in England ( where we live I guess it would end up as Ian)

In the family there is already Bryn, Gareth, Huw, Dylan, Rhys, Ianto

Do you really want Welsh names? It sounds like your DH isn't bothered, am I right?

SayNoToCarrots · 29/04/2018 15:31

I think Welsh Ewan is Ioan.

firefirejugdypantsonfire · 29/04/2018 15:32

Yes DH wants a welsh name, our other two boys have welsh names.DH just expects me to come up with the names, and he either says likes it or not. It's hard, as I'm not welsh and DH is just lazy

Not sure of origin, but Kai was my top name for a boy. Ewan/Euan are/were popular boys names in Scotland so maybe try a Celtic feel rather than Welsh? I adore Ruaridh - Rory.... again Celtic

I know a Iwan and a Ieuan ( both welsh) . There are several welsh forms of John.

stellinaa · 29/04/2018 15:38

I like Ellis, but not so much Cai (prefer with a K).

missmouse101 · 29/04/2018 15:39

Ioan is pronounced 'Yo uhn' with the emphasis on the 'yo'.

firefirejugdypantsonfire · 29/04/2018 15:39

I've just looked at the Rooney children Kai, Kit & Klay !! Grin

Iesten?

BigcatLittlecat · 29/04/2018 15:41

Ioan is pronounced yo-an. I love Ioan. Not a fan of Cai really. Ellis is ok. Ianto (yan-toe) is my favourite Also Rhodri, Evan Owen are nice.

Blackbirdblue30 · 29/04/2018 15:43

I think Ellis is ok but Cai just screams Wayne Rooney

missmouse101 · 29/04/2018 15:43

Iestyn (yestin), deri, geraint (ger-int to rhyme with pint), rhodri, tomos? I like cai!

firefirejugdypantsonfire · 29/04/2018 15:44

Ioan would get said as Ian here Sad

At least Cai or Ellis don't need explaining .. just wasn't sure if they are welsh or not ?

I prefer Ellis

Iwan is prononced like Ewan and Ieuan is either ‘Yayan’ or ‘Yoyan’ ( have heard both).

teamclean · 29/04/2018 15:45

Well, choose names YOU like OP (Welsh or otherwise). If DH who is actually Welsh can't be bothered to stir himself to get involved, well you should have more say, quite honestly.

firefirejugdypantsonfire · 29/04/2018 15:49

Is Rhodri too close to Rodney Grin?

I like welsh names actually

The I is Y sound always catches me out, and will cause mispronunciation for life outside Wales

Dai instead of Cai?

Moominfan · 29/04/2018 15:50

I really like both. Kai probably won't go down well with mumsnet crowd but if you like it go with it

Korg · 29/04/2018 15:50

Ianto and Evan are lovely.

Redtractorwontsleep · 29/04/2018 15:51

Yes Cai and Ellis both Welsh names, popular here in north Wales. Seen Ellis spelt Elis as well. I know a Morgan, Guto, Steffan, Sion, Rhys to think of a few

weebarra · 29/04/2018 15:53

I like Rhodri, Ianto (reminds me of Torchwood!) and Evan. A friend of mine has a Welsh/Scottish Rhys, which is nice too.

MissTeri · 29/04/2018 15:54

What about Aled?

Serendipityme · 29/04/2018 15:59

Evan is a lovely Welsh boy's name.
