Ellis & Cai proper welsh names or chavy?

I need a welsh boys name for DS3. My DH is welsh but never suggests anything. I'm English.

I want something shortish and that can be easily read by non welshies.

Are Cai & Ellis options or not really Welsh names ? Hmm

I quite like Euan / Ewan but is the welsh version Iuan ? As sure that would be said differently in welsh and in England ( where we live I guess it would end up as Ian)

In the family there is already Bryn, Gareth, Huw, Dylan, Rhys, Ianto

Our DS is Ellis. Love it. I had no idea it had Welsh origin though. We're Scottish.

Ivegotfamilyandidrinkcupsoftea · 29/04/2018 17:24

Love Ellis!

TittyGolightly · 29/04/2018 17:25

Ellis is Scottish. Elis is Welsh. And both derive from Hebrew names.

hoochymama1 · 29/04/2018 17:32

Fire, dh is English and we live in England, dc's have welsh middle names, Iwan ( he loved saying it was 'I won' Grin) others are Dafydd and Tomos.
I like Dewi, Lewys, Rhys, Emrys, Bryn is great it means mountain!
Go for it! Cai and Ianto are good too Smile

Screenburn · 29/04/2018 18:47

Iolo (yoll-o)! Wish we had a welsh connection as it’s one of my favourite boy names ever!

MikeUniformMike · 29/04/2018 18:54

I'd go for something you like and is easy to pronounce.
I'd avoid Guto as people will mangle it. It's pronounced Gitto' (o as in English box, cot etc.)
Ioan is pronounced Yo-an (a as in English bat, cat etc.)
Iwan is the welsh Euan/Ewan and pronounced pretty much the same - it's a bit dated, with Ifan (pr Yvan or Evan) more popular.

Suggestions: Owen, Aled, Huw, Idris, Daniel, Griffith (it's Gruffudd in Welsh but the anglicised spelling is easier, Iori (pr. Yorry), Ianto, Iestyn (pr. Yes-din) (Justin), Dafydd (Dav-ith, the ith as in English with), Elis (Ellis), Jac, Gwilym (pr. Gwillim), Rhys (but it isn't pronounced Rees in welsh), Bryn, Glyn, Gwyn, Lloyd (Llwyd), Gethin, Wyn (pr. Win), Macsen
Lots of, but not all, biblical names are the same in Welsh - Noah, Jacob (Jack-ob) etc
I like Cai (rhymes with Eye) but not sure if the spelling would cause problems. There is no K in welsh.
Be careful with baby names sites - some names are a bit odd and some are misspelt.

@MikeUniformMike

Thanks great suggestions

Would Ellis be Elis like others have suggested ? I really like gwilym but the spelling could be an issue.

We already have a Bryn & a Huw

I'm still not sure on Cai ..it concerns me people feel it's chavy and don't know it as welsh

Thanks firefirejugdypantsonfire. Elis or Ellis - I'd probably use the anglicised version.
Funny I got your DSs name on my list - very nice names. Cai goes nicely with the brothers' names. I like Griff and it's popular in Wales,

Please don't call the baby Dylan. It's awful.

MikeUniformMike · 29/04/2018 20:21

Gwilym is now popular and is great. The misspelling you will get most will be Gwylim (which is wrong and would mean the name would be pronounced Gwullim)

How about Gwilym Elis

MikeUniformMike · 29/04/2018 20:21

Bryn, Huw a Gwilym. Lovely.

Greenyogagirl · 29/04/2018 20:27

What about Morgan, wren or Nye?

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 29/04/2018 20:27

I love Idris.

MikeUniformMike · 29/04/2018 20:29

Iolo is fab. The o's in it are both like the o in English of, box, dog etc. It doesn't rhyme with hollow.

Ragusa · 29/04/2018 20:31

I vote Macsen or Iori. You could always have Caio if Cai sounds a bit too rooney. Much nicer I think.

Really wish we had gone with welsh names now Sad

Temporaryanonymity · 29/04/2018 20:32

I have a Taliesin (known as Tal or Tally)

I also love Iestyn and Tomos.

rach01pink · 29/04/2018 20:33

Love both !

alphabook · 29/04/2018 20:34

My boy's middle name is Elis. I also like Iestyn, Steffan and Rhys.

Sophronia · 29/04/2018 20:45

Caio is nice.

MikeUniformMike · 29/04/2018 20:51

There is no J in the welsh alphabet either. Jam is cyffaith but I've always called it jam.

BestIsWest · 29/04/2018 20:58

I really like Caio. I haven’t heard it used as a name other than a place name but think it’s much nicer than Cai.

Bastardingcough · 29/04/2018 21:00

Nye, Keir, Tomos, and Idris are my favourite short Welsh names

snowsun · 29/04/2018 21:07

Dylan
Lloyd
Elis
Evan
Tomos
Huw
Osian
Afan
Dewi

Penfold007 · 29/04/2018 21:19

Dafydd is a lovely name

crimsonlake · 29/04/2018 21:26

Dylan, Dafydd, Huw, Gethin, Deuan, Glyn, Owen, Rhys, Alun, Alwyn, Ieuan, Llew, Llywellyn.

Heartofglass12345 · 29/04/2018 21:30

We have an Ellis and an Osian (hello to anyone that knows me Wink)
We liked Ioan and well
Iwan is different to Ioan

My son goes to a welsh school and there are a few Cai's, i wouldnt consider it chavvy, maybe it depends where you live?
