I need a welsh boys name for DS3. My DH is welsh but never suggests anything. I'm English.

I want something shortish and that can be easily read by non welshies.

Are Cai & Ellis options or not really Welsh names ? Hmm

I quite like Euan / Ewan but is the welsh version Iuan ? As sure that would be said differently in welsh and in England ( where we live I guess it would end up as Ian)

In the family there is already Bryn, Gareth, Huw, Dylan, Rhys, Ianto

Kai is a different name (technically, at least!). There is no K in the Welsh alphabet, but it sometimes appears in "borrowed" words.

Cai is the Welsh form of Caius. Cai appears as one of King Arthur's knights in the tale of Culhwch and Olwen in the Mabinogion, which is acollection of stories compiled in the 12th to 13th centuries, and the earliest prose literature in Britain.

Not so Wayne Rooney, really!

If you want a short name, how about Aled?

firefirejugdypantsonfire · 29/04/2018 16:00

@Marv1nGay3 (love the username btw)

I like Dai and would link to my DHs father who was Dafydd, but I can get past it being like Die, I'm not superstitious but I'm not sure I could name a baby that.

I know there's the welsh rugby player Dai Young Blush

Idris?

Fightthebear · 29/04/2018 16:17

Ellis is definitely a Welsh name (my Welsh-first-language uncle is Ellis) but I think spelt Elis is Welsh-er as a spelling?

firefirejugdypantsonfire · 29/04/2018 16:17

I knew 3 boys with Welsh parents, they were Ianto, Kai and, this may be completely the wrong spelling, Shuni.

Ianto became one of my favourite names.
I have a brother called Bryn too, another Welsh name.

Onlyforthedogposts · 29/04/2018 16:25

Macsen, Iolo?

CruCru · 29/04/2018 16:25

Would you consider David?

Bojangles33 · 29/04/2018 16:37

If you're spelling it the Welsh way I think it's Elis, not Ellis. I prefer that to Cai.

DrScully · 29/04/2018 16:39

I know a doctor who is Ellis - not chavy at all!
Cai on the other hand....

Fightthebear · 29/04/2018 16:49

I know a barrister Ellis.

Marv1nGay3 · 29/04/2018 17:01

I also know a Deian? And Dylan is easy to pronounce?

Youradviceneeded · 29/04/2018 17:04

I think Aled or Dylan would be good choices for you, given local pronunciation issues.

Youradviceneeded · 29/04/2018 17:04

Or Gethin?

Onlyhavetwohands · 29/04/2018 17:04

Elis would be one ‘l’ in Welsh

Roaring20s · 29/04/2018 17:07

Cai is hideous

Sophronia · 29/04/2018 17:17

How about...

Morgan
Dylan
Emlyn
Idris
Macsen/Maxen
Owen
Rhys
Tomos

GRW · 29/04/2018 17:17

How about Alun. I like Ellis but not Cai.

Marv1nGay3 · 29/04/2018 17:19

I also like Rhydian

TittyGolightly · 29/04/2018 17:20

Seen Ellis spelt Elis as well.

Ellis is the English version of the welsh name Elis. Ll has a particular sound in Welsh. It’s not L.

TittyGolightly · 29/04/2018 17:21

Maxen

There’s no ‘x’ in the welsh alphabet.

TittyGolightly · 29/04/2018 17:22

And Dylan is easy to pronounce?

Amazingly not.

Most people pronounce it Dill-an, which is wrong. Welsh pronunciation is Dull-an.
