Baby due in 8 weeks - husband and I at loggerheads

We have agreed a boy's name, it's the girls name we're not in agreement with.

We both had a girl's name each we loved, but the other didn't. Since then, I can't find a single name I like. DH is going through lists but it's fair to say our name preferences are light years apart. I also don't understand how we managed to agree so easily on a boy's name but are finding it so hard to agree on a girl's name.

Any tips or advice? We don't know the sex, but I really want the girl's name we pick to be something we both love.
Thanks!

Can you give examples of both yours and your hunsbands styles and we can see if we can think of a compromise? :)

MimiSunshine · 27/03/2018 13:39

What is your 1st choice boys name? Is there a feminine variation that you like?

Babdoc · 27/03/2018 13:40

Couldn’t you give her both names and toss a coin for which will be first or middle name?

Highpeak · 27/03/2018 16:34

Are there certain types of names, sounds etc you both like? Maybe give us some examples of what you each like.
DH and I went back and forth loads until we reached a compromise we both liked and have grown to love. I liked names with L sounds, he liked T sounds. We agreed the name couldn't end in A or N due to middle/surname and so on.

lakeshoreliving · 27/03/2018 16:39

Don't do what I did, coming round in a morphine induced haze after giving birth I suggested giving ds the name Dh wanted as a first name, my favorite name as a middle name and using the middle name. When off drugs I tried to come to a more sensible solution but DH wouldn't give way. So we went with that solution.
Years later DH admitted that he thought I would give up using the middle name, we never have apart from passport etc.

Get a baby name book, start at A and work your way through? That's what DH and I did - passed some time in the labour ward, at least....

@User27839494 He likes Jessica and then comic book names, superhero names etc, such as Cara - think that's supergirl's name, Selina etc.

I'm in love with the name Adela (pronounced A-day-la). It's a German name, it was my great aunt's name and has so much significance to me. It would mean the world to my mum and nana (and me of course) if I named baby this if it's a girl. My great aunt brought up my nana so she was practically her mother. I also like Adelena as it's a play on the name, but hubs doesn't care for either name.

I like names ending in 'a'. DH is happy to have 'a' ending names, but that's as far as we get in agreeing.

@MimiSunshine, our boy's name is Robin. I love it because it's a sweet name and a boy could make it sound more grown up as he gets older by shortening to Rob if he wished. DH loves Robin because it's Batman's sidekick's name! 🙄

While I like Robin/Robyn for a girl, for some reason I'm not in love with it for a girl. And again, I have this thing for 'a' ending girl's names. I think it's a Greek thing (family are Greek Cypriot and all us girls and ladies having names ending in a).

For those who mentioned using one of our favourites as a middle name; unfortunately we've already picked out middle names for a girl and a boy. A boy will have both our father's names and a girl will have both our mother's names. It would have been a compromise but we're both set on having our parents name's as middle names.

We're a fussy pair, aren't we?!?

Do you like Athena? Sounds superhero/comic book themed, plus it ends in 'a' and is Greek inspired!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 27/03/2018 18:08

Go on namedtogether.com and see if there are some you agree on.

DonaldWeasley · 27/03/2018 18:10

Talia? Character from batman but also ends in A.

Ada

BoofayTheOompaLoompaSlayer · 27/03/2018 18:13

@ChocolateCrunch, I LOVE that name. However, it's too similar to my daughter's name, Thea. It would get quite difficult calling both those names out without getting the girls confused!!
I do really really love it though!

@ThroughThickAndThin01 Thanks! I'll have a look! 👍🏽

@DonaldWeasley, who's that then?!? Don't recognise the name. I like Talia, but don't love it.
Not so keen on Ada, although I am a fan of all the Ada... and Ade... names.
I think I've just not come to terms with the fact that I can't call our potential girl Adela. I really am very in love with this name. I find myself almost grieving it if that makes sense. Probably the bloody pregnancy hormones!

Try the Babyname app - you both download it on your phones, friend each other and then you both swipe left/right on names and the app creates a list of the ones you both like!

DonaldWeasley · 27/03/2018 18:19

Talia Al-gul, she’s not exactly a goodie but my superhero-mad DH was keen on it. I vetoed it though.

We have argued with all 4 of our DC! We even only decided with DC3 as we were on way to registering the birth. We have only one DD called Hannah, her cousin is Jemima and another Ella. You will definitely find the name that you both agree on...good luck. And good luck when the wee one arrives too!

unicornfarts · 27/03/2018 18:23

Ava/ Eva?
Evelina?
Gaia?
Arya?

PotteringAlong · 27/03/2018 18:23

Magdelena?

BoofayTheOompaLoompaSlayer · 27/03/2018 18:26

What's the consensus on the name Callista or Kallista?

Is a Greek name ending in a ✔️
It means most beautiful - neato
It could be shortened to Callie or Kalli (Kalli is the surname of the Greek side of my family).

Any superhero references for the name???

Still don't love it over Adela, but it's an idea (one I haven't shared with DH though).

What about Leia?
Nice a sound at the end. Has a similar sounds to Adela and the Star Wars connection might appeal to your dh.

Lucia and Viola have a similar type of feel too.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 27/03/2018 18:31

Callista is nice too.

spacecadet48 · 27/03/2018 18:34

I quite like Callista, there are a few to choose from. Get on google and you and your DH go through the many lists of namrs. Acadia, Arcadia, Astoria, Alethia, Ophelia, Portia, Valeria. Gaia, Corinthea, Giovanna, Astoria..there are hundreds! Good luck

HeartySoup · 27/03/2018 19:25

What about names like Lara, Zara, Tara?

CoolGirlsNeverGetAngry · 27/03/2018 19:31

Roberta

MimiSunshine · 27/03/2018 22:11

See I think Robyn Adela on a girl sounds lovely. But you’ve already said the middle names are set.

Would you still be giving a daughter your mother’s/MILs names if your husband changed his mind and agreed to Adela?

Perhaps you could think about swapping out your mothers and using Adela as one of the middle names and finding a name that a) you both love and b) would be your daughters own name rather than repeat.

How about:
Cassandra - Greek & batgirl apparently
Gabriella
Vanessa
Lana - from superman
