Baby due in 8 weeks - husband and I at loggerheads

We have agreed a boy's name, it's the girls name we're not in agreement with.

We both had a girl's name each we loved, but the other didn't. Since then, I can't find a single name I like. DH is going through lists but it's fair to say our name preferences are light years apart. I also don't understand how we managed to agree so easily on a boy's name but are finding it so hard to agree on a girl's name.

Any tips or advice? We don't know the sex, but I really want the girl's name we pick to be something we both love.
Thanks!

@LastNightsMakeUp I get your thinking. I wouldn't be naming him after Batman's sidekick, I'd be naming him that as I love the name Robin, and c'mon, those little birds are sticking cute!!
I vetoed Clark early on, and several other superhero names! It's determined to give a son of ours Optimus Prime as a middle name. See what I'm dealing with here!!!

@longestlurkerever I actually like Cara too. It's a nice name. We had a weirdo neighbour called Cara until last year when we moved. I can't get past that!! He likes Cora too, but that's the Evil Queen's mum's name in Once Upon a Time. She was nastee!

@FartnissEverbeans Every day is a school day! Was convinced Artemis was a boy only name. Didn't know it was both! I've done some googling and I stand corrected!..... Don't like it though, so gonna put a line through that one.

He's not totally about the superhero/comic book names, no. I'll have to look at his list again and see what he's got on there now.

I think I'm going to do what someone up thread suggested and park the choosing of a girl's name for now. Will (try to) wait and see who we've got, and if needs be, choose a girl's name then!

Ok, I’m biased... but my name is Adele. I was just thinking the other day that I love my name. It isn’t too fussy, passes the plumber / Human Rights Lawyer test, is unusual enough that there aren’t hundreds, but still easily recognisable as a real name too. I also love the versions Adeline and Adela (actually when I was growing up I’d have preferred Adela).
Would Madeleine or Madeleina be a compromise?
FWIW, I also like Jessica, but not as much as Adela.

BTW, to post this I tried to change my user name to AdeleIsTheGreatestName, but it was taken, so more than one person has the same idea!

ChikiTIKI · 29/03/2018 19:57

I don't know how a man can watch his wife carry a baby and give birth, and not let her choose the name... Unless it's something he HATES then what's the problem? I think names change meaning once you give them to a child anyway. I don't think of my baby's name in the same way now as I did before she was born. The name is hers now and when I think of it I think of her little character.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 29/03/2018 19:59

Really Chiki? So the man has no input whatsoever on the name of his child?

LastNightsMakeUp · 29/03/2018 20:01

@BoofayTheOompaLoompaSlayer you have my complete sympathy 😂. I'm very thankful my OH isn't into superhero's!

I've been trying to keep it on the down low but one of my top names on my list for a girl is Lois. Apart from the obvious Lois Lane I've only known one Lois and she's such a lovely person, but she has a bit of an edge about her which I love too. Lois means 'better'.... it could be ammunition for potential sibling arguments later on though! 'I'm literally better than you 😝.'

Raines100 · 29/03/2018 20:03

@BoofayTheOompaLoompaSlayer I've heard it pronounced 'a-DAY-lee' as in Adélie Land, which was named after the wife of the French explorer who discovered it- you may have heard of the penguins.

I assume it should actually rhyme with Amélie, but we anglicise that as 'AM-uh-lee', not 'am-AY-lee', so I think there's a case for 'AD-uh-lee'. I hope it's a strong case, because I love it this way! Grin

ChikiTIKI · 29/03/2018 20:06

No. The way we did it was I had a list of boy and girl names I liked, my husband hated a few of them but liked most of them. Think he might have added a couple too. I then picked my favourite boy and girl names which happened to be ones I had suggested to begin with. After she was born he told me he wasn't as keen on the boy name but wouldn't have minded as he thought I should have final choice.

What about Natalia (Natasha), the Black Widow? It's a gorgeous name with an A ending and reminds me of Adela.

PhuntSox · 29/03/2018 20:12

How about Lois?

Or Adaline?

Eh? I only know one Artemis and she’s definitely a woman. Hmm

I think there’s nothing wrong with Adela other than the fact she’ll spend a lot of time correcting people who pronounce it, Ad-e-la rather than, A-day-la.

BoofayTheOompaLoompaSlayer · 29/03/2018 21:00

@Woodfordhound Ok, ok, I get it! Artemis is a girl's name!!

Incidentally, I've just asked dh. Artemis; is it a boy's name or a girl's name?
He looked at me confused and said boys.
I'm not the only one!

Just name her Adeline and call her Adela for short.

TheImprobableGirl · 29/03/2018 21:16

Anastasia or Natasa? Obviously pronounced An-as-das-ee-uh and na-dass-a

Dancingmonkey87 · 29/03/2018 21:17

TortieBlackCat I to am also called Adele. My dad didn’t like it however my Mam got her way. My middle name is Adele Marie so it’s ok although I would have preferred Adeline to Adele. I agree why not go for Adeline but use Adela for short.

Woodfordhound · 29/03/2018 22:03

Ok. It was just the way you were so rude. Oh and the fact that you’re apparently Greek.

BoofayTheOompaLoompaSlayer · 29/03/2018 22:46

@Woodfordhound

Artemis? For a girl?! Are you on glue?!?!! 😂

Where was I rude?!? I was making a mumsnetty joke! And I explained up thread it was a joke. Clearly I missed my audience. I've been grateful and respectful throughout. I'm very grateful to everyone who's commented on this thread.

My family are Greek Cypriot. I'm British. My nan is German. I'm not aware of every Greek name or German name there is however. I know the Greek and German names in my family, family friends names and names I've taken notice of during our name search. And as for Greek gods and goddesses, don't know all of them either. Sorry. Can I be forgiven now?

@TortieBlackCat and @Dancingmonkey87, Adele is gorgeous. It's a very elegant name. Got a feeling hubs has vetoed it though. I dare to bring up names at the mo.

Still parking picking a girl name for a while though.

Thank you for all your comments. Please, no need to suggest anymore. Going to keep this thread saved and come back to it nearer the birth. Some really lovely names suggested and lots to consider. Greek names are so beautiful.

Thank you again! 😊

Agree with posters suggesting you drop Adela and deal with it. Your H dislikes it, so it’s out. Pregnancy/ birth doesn’t mean you get to choose. You are unlikely to like any other names as much as your preferred one, but there must be some that he likes that you like somewhat: could choose a few of those and see which suits your DC, if she’s a girl.
