Sibling name for Merlin

Name changed because DH and I assumed that many Merlin's were born each year, apparently there are not, so this thread could be identifying combined with other posts.

DC1 is called Merlin and he is getting a brother in a few months. We had a name for a girl sorted before even getting pregnant with our first, but DH and I find boy names very difficult. Merlin was only on our list at about 38 weeks and I'd like DC2 to have a name sooner so I can relax.

Names that DH has vetoed:

Quinn
Byron
Adam
Idris

Names I have suggested that DH likes:

Xander

Names that DH likes:

Arthur - We are NOT having Merlin and Arthur. The piss would be taken forever more and people would think that's why we picked Merlin instead of us both just liking the name.

Names I like that DH has not expressed an opinion on:

Elian
Bastian
Emrys - DC2 will not be called this, just an example of one I like
Bennett

Any suggestions? I appear to be going off of Xander now that DH has started to like it.

Love Merlin!

How about Quentin? You could still get nickname Quinn from it.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 05/03/2018 08:30

I don't know why, but as soon as I read your post, Torquil came to mind.

Sleephead1 · 05/03/2018 08:39

Hi what about Rowan or Roman, I met a little boy called Orion once which really suited him and just recently heard a Otto. Some I like but not sure if unusual enough are Jude, Nate Sebastian, Finn

anonymouser · 05/03/2018 08:45

My DS is called Bastian (never ending story here too!) and we don't have a problem with people not being able to spell it, and we use it in different languages as well.

Once in a while older generations (grandparent age) will ask if he said Sebastian (he mumbles), but not very often.

Love the name, and Bastian likes it too - and is actually rather proud of not being a Sebastian 😅 So my vote is on Bastian 😉

Saffronwblue · 05/03/2018 08:51

Magnus

What was the girl's name you would have used?

MaidenMotherCrone · 05/03/2018 09:08

Jasper goes well and so does Rowan

DuggeeHugs · 05/03/2018 09:19

A shame he doesn't want Idris as they go well!

Hugo
Tristan
Yannis
Nathaniel
Thaddeus

HelenaJustina · 05/03/2018 09:31

So far I think
Hector and Tristan
Are the best suggested, though I know a fabulous 5yr old Quinn. Merlin is great, my DH would never have gone for it!

LostPlatypus · 05/03/2018 09:48

I actually know a young Bastian (I haven't asked where the inspiration for his name came from but his parents are big fantasy fans so it would make sense!) Anyway, I have never assumed that his name was short for anything because I've known it as a name in its own right before I knew him.

I totally understand wanting to give your children names they don't have to spell all the time. The thing is, people can misspell even the simplest of things so they might end up having to spell it anyway. I have a really common surname (let's pretend it's Jones) and I still get people going "sorry did you say James?" 😒

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 05/03/2018 09:50

I know of two brothers called Merlin and Peregrine - they seemed to go together pretty well.

TheRedHatofPatFerrick · 05/03/2018 09:56

Seth
Casper
Marius
Finley
Austin

Some great suggestions here, I particularly love those from mathanxiety. Seconding Ludovic, or even just Ludo. Merlin is fabulous.

Viviennemary · 05/03/2018 10:13

Why not just choose a name you like. I don't get that two children's names have to be 'matched' in some way.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 05/03/2018 10:17

Merlin and Granville.

sakura06 · 05/03/2018 10:20

I like Tristan too. Idris is also great and most people won't necessarily recognise it as a Welsh name because of Idris Elba. Xander is also cool.

eaturveggies · 05/03/2018 10:56

I love Lysander!
