Sibling name for Merlin

Name changed because DH and I assumed that many Merlin's were born each year, apparently there are not, so this thread could be identifying combined with other posts.

DC1 is called Merlin and he is getting a brother in a few months. We had a name for a girl sorted before even getting pregnant with our first, but DH and I find boy names very difficult. Merlin was only on our list at about 38 weeks and I'd like DC2 to have a name sooner so I can relax.

Names that DH has vetoed:

Quinn
Byron
Adam
Idris

Names I have suggested that DH likes:

Xander

Names that DH likes:

Arthur - We are NOT having Merlin and Arthur. The piss would be taken forever more and people would think that's why we picked Merlin instead of us both just liking the name.

Names I like that DH has not expressed an opinion on:

Elian
Bastian
Emrys - DC2 will not be called this, just an example of one I like
Bennett

Any suggestions? I appear to be going off of Xander now that DH has started to like it.

@Backtoblack1 No I'm not Welsh but my great grandparents were (though that had no bearing on Merlin). The names just seemed to jump out at me when browsing baby name lists.

I do like Welsh names but I don't want to hijack them as I live in the South East and it would probably be seen as a bit weird. That might have been one of the reasons DH doesn't like Idris but I can't remember.

No not weird - just different?

Do you want a short syllable name or long? What is your surname as You would need to match that too 🤣

Biscusting · 04/03/2018 22:24

Bob? Can’t be many baby Bobs out there, no one would as how to spell.

Or just go with something totally out there

Mungo or Fergal?

Tartsamazeballs · 04/03/2018 22:25

What about Silas- means "of the forest". old fashioned, unusual but biblical so on the verge of being recognized. Si as a sensible nickname. No "theming".

TwitterQueen1 · 04/03/2018 22:28

Lancelot
Geraint
Galahad
Percival
Tristan

Or John?

Fretfulparent · 04/03/2018 22:28

Atticus
Both meaningful names but different contexts

Identifyingbabyname · 04/03/2018 22:28

Surname is a huge double barrelled affair as I didn't change my name when we married, but DH and I both wanted our names on the children. I imagine they'll either drop one of them, take their partners name or come up with a new name when they get married.

I'd rather not say exactly what it is (as I have a rare surname in addition to an oddly spelt first name), but it's similarish to Showell-Middleton.

One or two syllable name I think then. Sorry if that doesn’t help. I have twins - one has a Welsh name and the other doesn’t. I just went with names I really liked and they do go together x

The fangirl in me is loving this.

You do know that Emrys was Merlin's Druid name on the show? And that most fan fiction about the character called him Merlin Emrys.

Seriously though, I love Griffin and it's in the magical theme. 🙂

Identifyingbabyname · 04/03/2018 22:48

@feral Yes, that was where I heard it, but it's essentially having two children with the same name! I hadn't watched the programme until on leave with Merlin as a newborn and I quite enjoyed it. It also made me like the name more as I liked the actor.

I've had one woman tell me that it was a horrible name and several people gently mocking my name choice. I didn't mind the mocking as I half expected it once I realised the rarity of the name, but the woman who said it was horrible worked in one of the children and family centres.

I'm worried we'll make another "mistake" (I love Merlin as a name more than ever, but I have been worried he won't like it after the mocking, and then being told it was horrible to my face, despite the majority of people telling me they like it) and someone will tell me to my face that we've given DC2 a shit name. Hence why I'm canvassing as wide a variety of people as possible!

Awww I came on to say Emrys! I once sat next to a family in a restaurant with a Merlin, Falcon and Tiger.

Merlin and Peregrine are both species of falcons so Peregrine works!

feral · 04/03/2018 23:03

If you like Arthurian names then Tristan is lovely.

Owain is another favourite.

(My DS middle name is Emrys because of the show and my slight obsession with Colin Morgan

EllenJanethickerknickers · 04/03/2018 23:05

I think you should avoid a matchy name but you need another strong name to be 'as good as' Merlin. I think Hector or Luther are my favourites of those mentioned. Greek mythology rather than Celtic or European.
