Sibling name for Merlin

Name changed because DH and I assumed that many Merlin's were born each year, apparently there are not, so this thread could be identifying combined with other posts.

DC1 is called Merlin and he is getting a brother in a few months. We had a name for a girl sorted before even getting pregnant with our first, but DH and I find boy names very difficult. Merlin was only on our list at about 38 weeks and I'd like DC2 to have a name sooner so I can relax.

Names that DH has vetoed:

Quinn
Byron
Adam
Idris

Names I have suggested that DH likes:

Xander

Names that DH likes:

Arthur - We are NOT having Merlin and Arthur. The piss would be taken forever more and people would think that's why we picked Merlin instead of us both just liking the name.

Names I like that DH has not expressed an opinion on:

Elian
Bastian
Emrys - DC2 will not be called this, just an example of one I like
Bennett

Any suggestions? I appear to be going off of Xander now that DH has started to like it.

@Saffronwblue Jocelynne is our girl name should we ever have one. Though I would be looking for opinions on spelling to make it as easy as possible.

@anonymouser I may put Bastian back on again as a name on its own if you've not had any problems with it. Only slight issue is that DH said that he may get called Baz which reminds me of Barry (and I know several of those that I don't like).

Pressed post too soon!

@FresasAndFrambuesas One of those names is a variant of DH's name!

I am listing all the suggestions that I like after doing the shouting test, where I imagine I'm yelling at them to come back across the park to see if I think I'd sound stupid!

I am ever so grateful for the suggestions, DH has the link to the thread but probably hasn't read it so I'll try and get his opinion on the new list this evening.

@Identifyingbabyname

Nope, no problems ☺️ The only other Bastian I know is called Basti as nickname, have never heard of Baz, but I guess it depends on region and crowd. I just love that it isn't a common name (we only know one other), but it isn't too unusual either, so you don't get weird looks or people constantly misunderstanding.
Although I had many problems and hated my (not unusual, but can be spelled a trillion different ways and no one ever gets it right) name, so we gave him Lucas as a middle name - Too popular for me to want to call him that, but love the name if everyone wasn't called it, and he can change to that if he at some point is unhappy with Bastian ☺️

If Bastian is back on the table I'd vote for that.

TatianaLarina · 05/03/2018 14:10

Bastian is awful. Just call him Sebastian.

Camp Bastion was a major British army base in Afghanistan - it will sound like weird jingoism.

Gladisgood · 05/03/2018 14:37

I really love Merlin!

Unusual names that are easily spelled ( I don't think have been mentioned yet):-

Sherlock
Mycroft
Clayton
Victor
Rex

I like Sebastian - but I don't like Bastian ( sorry)

I like Adam - these are also nice but underused!
Jeremy
Alaisdair.
Matthew
Laurence

I know someone who's son is brydone id never heard it before but I think it sounds nice with merlin?

TatianaLarina · 05/03/2018 15:51

Brydone sounds very much of the Jayden/Kayden/Braydon ilk and misspelt to boot.

workshyfop · 05/03/2018 16:20

Caspian?

pipilangstrumpf · 05/03/2018 17:12

Bastian is really awful and so close to Bastard or Basty!

Identifyingbabyname · 05/03/2018 18:24

@pipilangstrumpf I didn't know what a Basty was, I don't think anybody we know will have heard of it. I don't think it's close to Bastard as we have southern accents so the words don't sound very similar, am I correct in thinking it's an accent thing? I suppose he could move somewhere more northern when he grows up which would cause an issue with similar sounds.

Rolls Royce Merlin engines were superseded by their Griffon.
So Griffon?

17caterpillars1mouse · 06/03/2018 11:27

Oh i love Merlin - could never convince DH

I was going to suggest Emrys lol

I like Elian alot but DH said it looked girly. I also like Bastian but DH said he would be called Bastian the Bast... seems I have similar tastes to you but your DH is more agreeable :)

Have you considered Elias, similar to Elian

I will also suggest:

Rafe
Alec
Ewan
Evan
Leo - I know if doesn't really fit with other names mentioned but I just like the sound of Merlin and Leo
Nolan

SeeKnievelHitThe17thBus · 06/03/2018 11:47

How about Larkin? Not a name I'm familiar with but DS has a friend with the name and it would go with Merlin without being too samey.

I love Gethin and Beckett as well. Good luck op, remember baby doesn't have to have a name until weeks after they're here so see what they look like when [he] arrives.
