How many Dexters do you know?

DS is 4mo and is named Dexter. We liked it for many reasons but one of them was that is was quite low down on the popularity scale. Quite often when people ask his name they say 'oh my friend just called their baby Dexter!' It's obviously not a big deal, it's just a name so please don't think I'm being a special snowflake. My 3yo DNiece is an Isla and they thought it was a very rare name, and now it's in the top 10 I think so I guess it got me wondering if DP and I have made the same mistake.
So MNs, how many Dexter's, if any, do you know?

One directly, a few indirectly. I’m near London. It’s definitely rising in popularity.

GimbleInTheWabe · 20/02/2018 16:12

Wow lots of Dexter's! He'll be Gimbles Dexter then ha. You have great taste Barre!

My nickname (Leo) is a really popular boys name now and I'm always turning round to people shouting Leo! and quickly realise they're talking to a 4yo boy and not me.

Ooh didn't know the cow connection @DuckBilledAardvark And @extinctspecies! We did have a few people say 'You named him after the murderer' ergo the tv show Dexter Hmm

No humans (N.Ireland)

YouCantBeSirius · 20/02/2018 16:14

I know one. He is about 3-4 now.

GimbleInTheWabe · 20/02/2018 16:14

Ah @fruityb you clearly also have fine taste. I've actually only had the dog thing since writing this thread... everyone is obviously too polite to say it in real life!

I know three, one cat ;) one kid about 3 and one around 7.

I do love the name though as a fan of the TV show and I dressed then 3mo baby as Dexter complete with fake chainsaw for Hallowe'en

BlackberryandNettle · 20/02/2018 16:25

I don't know any! It's a lovely name.

17caterpillars1mouse · 20/02/2018 16:31

1 know 2. Both under 2 (just)

littleostrich · 20/02/2018 16:38

One, he's 7.

Arapaima · 20/02/2018 17:46

I know one, he’s 9.

ScreamingValenta · 20/02/2018 17:49

I have never met anyone called Dexter.

Cosmoa · 20/02/2018 17:59

Just the 1 who is about 5yo!

It's really hard to tell what is going to be popular.. What is on a list of unique names? Those things just produce popular names because every searches for the same list and then picks from it. Which is how we ended up with loads of Isla's and Noah's etc...

Desperatelyseekingsun · 20/02/2018 18:13

Only cows and I see I'm not the only one. Good breed though.

Rednailsandnaeknickers · 20/02/2018 18:30

1 human.
3 dogs.
Grin
It is a cool name, don't worry. And I dont think murderer either.

Dontrocktheboat · 20/02/2018 18:41

One Dexter aged 6.
I can sympathise - my dd aged 9 has the same name as your niece with a slight spelling variation. The year she was born it leapt about 40 places in the baby name chart - I was gutted (and continued to be for ages though have to say it doesn't bother me much now so that particular angst does wear off eventually!)
My experience was that lots of people liked to tell me about the other babies they knew with the same name, as if this was an amazing coincidence - probably as until recently it was a name that was heard rarely. So if it had been Sophie or Lucy I doubt people would have bothered! I suspect that is probably the same with Dexter, as it is definitely more popular than it was, doesn't necessarily mean if will make top 10!

Somersetter · 20/02/2018 19:43

It will always make me think of Dex Dexter from Dynasty

No humans. 1 cat and 1 dog.

Countingsheeeep · 20/02/2018 19:54

I don't know any and spend alot of time around babies these days as I have a 12 month old. Didn't realize it was popular! Love it though.

0123fluffyunicorn · 20/02/2018 19:55

I only know 1, and he's a dog!

SpikeGilesSandwich · 20/02/2018 20:13

Only one, makes me think of little cows which is always a good thing Smile

GimbleInTheWabe · 20/02/2018 20:20

I hadn't heard of Dex Dexter until recently @Somersetter from what I hear he was a bit of a cad!

Thanks to everyone saying they like it Grin tbh even if it became really popular I love it so much I don't think I'd mind. My DP has a really popular/classic name (think James, George etc) and he said that there was still only 3 others in his school. My DSis on the other hand is a teacher and at one point had the MN favourite trio of Jayden, Kayden and Braden all in her class!

GimbleInTheWabe · 20/02/2018 20:23

And yes I think you're right @Dontrocktheboat, an 'unusual' name is going to stick out more than the Oscar's and George's which are popular so it's probably more likely that people will remember the other little one who shares the name.
My name is Leonora which I see suggested all the time on here (usually followed by lots of people saying they hate it, not that I mind) and I've only ever met one other lady who shares my name. She was in her 70s and I was the first other Leonora she'd met too. We took a picture to commemorate the moment Grin

There are 2 Dexters in DDs Year 2 class and I know one other who is 4.

LucyMorningStar · 20/02/2018 21:01

Only one. He was a serial killer in a TV show 😁

mummmy2017 · 20/02/2018 21:18
