Last night we went to see my cousins gorgeous new twins and we're in shock. They have named them Felix and Fearne. Fern has been our name almost right from the start of this pregnancy but we didnt tell anyone in rl. My cousin and I are very close both geographically and emotionally so it really is off the table for us. I lightly told him he'd pinched our girl's name and he was really apologetic bless him. No one's fault but I'm gutted especially as the whole family have said what a beautiful name it is . Mn will be Angelica which we cannot use as a first name. Our dd is Nancy surname J. Please any suggestions of what we may like? We're both stumped

This is annoying. My name that I'd had in mind for years (long before I'd even met DH) was taken but it's just one of those things. I think from the names suggested Fleur and Violet are lovely. I also like Elsie but it's meant to be getting really popular. I don't think you should use Fern or even Fearne.

Thank you all so very much. Spent the day getting my head around it and was thrilled to see so many brilliant suggestions. I can't use the name. My Fern would always be the second one. I just can't. Favourite ever name is Lois which DH HATES. Love Hazel but it's a friend's dog. Not overly bothered about it being F or floral just liked the sound. We're not Scottish so doesn't have to be a Scottish name. Some Welsh Swiss and Swedish blood if that helps! I don't really want anything too old lady with Nancy as it will sound a bit themed. DH likes:
Morven Lyra Sian. I don't. He's trying though! I like
Merryn Jocelyn Keziah Zoe Seren . He doesn't. Thanks again for the suggestions and the support

Lois Angelica mades me think of Los Angeles.

If you like Lois, how about something similar like Louise, which would go very well with Nancy, and it's not common at all. Or Elise / Eloise?

You should call her Faith.

Fenna is great and not too different to Fern! I don’t think it matters that they both end in an A as people very rarely say their first and middle name together, they also sound ok when said out loud imo, despite the double A ending

I love Laurel. It just rolls off the tongue in a really satisfying way and conjures up an instant image of a wreath of leaves and who can object to that.

If you live in the SE names ending in L like Laurel can end up with "w" sound at the end after the l due to the accent.

Lawelw with the "r" disappearing.

How about Menna? That is another Welsh one, so similar to Fenna and you don't hear it so much now. Also Manon, Mali, Mabli if you like M names.

Faye still usable, similar to Fern but far enough away?

You've both got an S name in there too:

Sabrina
Sabina
Sigrid (Swedish)
Selina

Linnea another Swedish one

Other ransoms with the gentle sound that Fern has:

Anwen
Melissa
Ffion
Nia
Nina
Tansy

Robyn Angelica is pretty. I love Jocelyn too. Esme? Faith? Clemence? Frances?

Have to say that while Fern is pretty, it's a fairly insubstantial name. You might end up pleased that you ended up choosing something longer or more classic. Maybe get totally away from Fern and think about the attributes you would like a name to have- nickname potential? Goes with surname? Has a strong meaning? Also, Angelica is so feminine, it might be nice to have a stronger name in front.

For example, something like Josephine Angelica would work well. Classic, could be Josie, Posy, Sephie for short, and stronger than Angelica. Of course no good unless you love the name by you see what I mean.

Sudden thought- Melissa would shorten to Fliss? ( I love this name but it's v similar to Angelica really)
