Is it too much of a mouthful ?!
Can't think of a nice nickname for it ??
Love the meaning - brave as a bear :)

I've always loved it, but now they've brought out a character in eastenders with it! Blush I'm not due for a good while tho (so hopefully they'll kill her off)!

It's usually Bernie

Though the character in The Big Bang Theory is nearly always referred to by all her syllables.

Or you could try a Blackadder theme and go via Bernard to Nursey?

AnyaMoondial · 17/11/2017 07:09

Ettie or Etta

abbsisspartacus · 17/11/2017 07:11

Bernie is a common nickname tbf there are worse nicknames

Crumbs1 · 17/11/2017 07:13

All the Bernadette I know are called either Bernie or detta.

loobybear · 17/11/2017 07:16

Would Dotty work as a nickname for Bernadette?

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 17/11/2017 07:33

I've known 2 Bernices known as Ben and Bunny respectively. Would either of those work? The only Bernadettes I've known have been either Bernie or Bernadette depending on who they're talking to.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 17/11/2017 07:36

Bernadette is only 3 syllables so it's not that much of a mouthful

The ones I've come across have either been known by full name or Bernie

I like both

pickleface · 17/11/2017 07:42

Nettie?

Bananasplit47 · 17/11/2017 07:44

I know a Bernadette who goes by Bea.

user1497545304 · 17/11/2017 08:19

Bea / etta / ettie

YessicaHaircut · 17/11/2017 09:01

There’s a character in the book Circle of Friends called Bernadette, known as Benny. Ettie is a lovely shortening too.

NataliaOsipova · 17/11/2017 09:02

I knew two girls called Bernadette. One was Bernie. The other, inexplicably, was Brenda!

squoosh · 17/11/2017 09:49

Is Bernadette making a comeback??

icantgetnosleep5 · 17/11/2017 09:56

Ooh thanks all! :) I really like Etta, bea, and crushing on Bunny!!

My other children all have one or two syllable names, so I guess it feels long to me.. Could I call her brave when she was little (as the meaning of her name) or is that just Too contrived and cheesy ?!

I know a 20-something Bernadette called Bennie. Smile I actually didn't know her full name was Bernadette for about a year, and assumed Bennie was short for some female version of Benjamin. Benjamina, maybe. Bennie is nicer than Bernie on girls, in my opinion.

IVflytrap · 17/11/2017 10:18

Ooh, just remembered, we also have a family friend called Dette, short for Bernadette.

NineFortySixPM · 17/11/2017 10:23

Without being mean, wouldn’t calling her Brave sound a bit weird? Imagine yourself at the park calling “Brave, time to go” or in the supermarket “No Brave, you can’t have sweets”. Or even just if you need to praise her for actual bravery “That was so Brave, Brave” sounds odd, no?

And what if she’s a very timid shy lass, being called Brave could be a millstone for her.

I’d stick to other nicknames myself, but ultimately your call

Intercom · 17/11/2017 10:25

Bette?

DontDrinkDontSmoke · 17/11/2017 10:27

Etta is lovely

smurfy2015 · 17/11/2017 10:31

My mother was a Bernadette, its one of my middle names (preens) she got combos of

Bernie
Detty
Babs
Etta
Betty
Babby

Although her brother my uncle called her BB, which was a cute nickname which turned out it stood for many things when they were growing up together (Beautiful Bernie, Beastly Bernie, Bold Bernie and the one i liked best as she was his younger sister Babby Bernie)

CrystalMcPistol · 17/11/2017 10:51

The name of a fat, sour faced nun who is obsessed with lecturing the class on the perils of heavy petting.

Bernadettes all tend to be religious nuts to be honest.

DramaAlpaca · 17/11/2017 11:36

Bernadette? Really? I just can't imagine a young Bernadette. I'm not sure it's ready for a comeback just yet.

As for nicknames, I have a friend called Bernadette who goes by Ben.

icantgetnosleep5 · 17/11/2017 11:42

Haha very brave Brave, fair doos, maybe I'll skip tht nickname!

Enjoyed your comment, thanks smurfy - and really like the nn Babs :)

Lol crystal, I see your point, we aren't religious , hopefully she won't be fodder for any crazy cults looking to enlist !

I must confess, if I had a little Bernadette I'd dress her in fluffy babygros with ears and call her Bear.

icantgetnosleep5 · 17/11/2017 20:06

Ooooooh spider light - LOVE tht idea and image !! steals !! X
