Really undecided with boys names and I just heard this. Have never considered it before but quite like it. I also love biblical names and from googling see it's in the bible. What are your thoughts?

I have been contemplating it too but decided it's too much of a dog's name. We are also stuck!

RosieTheRiveting · 31/08/2017 20:21

Love it

Susierocks · 31/08/2017 20:22

Hmm I see what you mean! I'm sure I'm having a boy as well and just can't find one I love as much as my girl choices. Have you got a shortlist?

OlennasWimple · 31/08/2017 20:23

I love it! Especially for a boy with red hair

Susierocks · 31/08/2017 20:23

Ooh thanks Rosie. Maybe I'll keep it on the list!

Dh and I both have blonde hair and blue eyes so unlikely to be a redhead.

Love it.

SumAndSubstance · 31/08/2017 20:31

It's a Roman name meaning 'red'. The only Rufus I know mentioned in the Bible is a Roman Christian - it's not a biblical name in the conventional sense. I'm a bit pedantic on these things and feel it should be bestowed upon a red-haired child, but I do know three little Rufuses (becoming quite popular?) all of whom have blonde hair, so I'm not sure anybody else minds Wink

olderandnowiser · 31/08/2017 20:31

Love it

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 31/08/2017 20:32

Rufus is not a dogs name!!!

I like the name Rufus

KatoPotato · 31/08/2017 20:32

I just think 'Bill and Ted'

Susierocks · 31/08/2017 20:41

What does biblical in the conventional sense mean? Do you mean Hebrew?

OP posts:
Timefor2 · 31/08/2017 20:47

I like it. It made me also think of Jonah for some reason (maybe the bilical link) which I really like?

SuperBeagle · 31/08/2017 21:57

Yes, it's not Biblical in the conventional sense, as a PP said. It's a Roman name, and was the name of some early saints. The only reason it's in the Bible is because one of the saints was mentioned by Paul in the New Testament.

Mammadragon · 31/08/2017 22:01

I named my cat Rufus and I'm gutted as I totally should have saved it for a son!! I love the name-really cool.

GurgleBoots · 31/08/2017 22:01

I like it.

SumAndSubstance · 31/08/2017 22:07

What does biblical in the conventional sense mean? Do you mean Hebrew?

I'm not entirely sure! Yes, I suppose I do mean Hebrew on the whole, though I would include the more common NT names as 'Biblical', like Mark and Luke. I don't think that just being mentioned in the Bible, particularly for some reason the NT, makes a name Biblical 'in the conventional sense'.

SumAndSubstance · 31/08/2017 22:10

Also, I suppose (still musing), Biblical implies to me that its origin as a name is that it's in the Bible, whereas Rufus is definitely a name that is Roman in origin.

Mclaren37 · 01/09/2017 00:27

Love Rufus, biblical or not!

tobee · 01/09/2017 00:40

Yes it is the best name possible to give a ds! SmileGrinWink

Susierocks · 01/09/2017 06:36

Ooh generally seems to be quite positive reactions.

tobee - do you have a ds called this? What have reactions been to it? Do you get the 'dog's name's thing?

timefor2 love love Jonah. We already have one in the family though so that's out.

ems137 · 01/09/2017 07:12

I really don't like it. I think it's because it reminds me of Rufus Hound off celebrity juice, so seems like a comedy made up name to me.

I'm probably a bit boring though and prefer fairly traditional names.

17caterpillars1mouse · 01/09/2017 07:25

I love it but DH and family all laughed and said it was a dogs name :(

MammieBear · 01/09/2017 07:27

Rufus is a fine name, stick with it.
