I've never posted on mn before but am due with baby number three next month and my husband and I are still undecided on names. With dd1 and dd2 we had them chosen almost from the beginning but this time we keep changing our minds! So I'm interested to hear what everyone thinks. In no particular order here is our shortlist for both boy and girl...

Boy:
Raphael
Harrison
Ioan
Wilf
Rusty

Girl:
Callista
Vivia
Eden
Mirabel
Pearl
Ophelia

I never popped back either when we had DD. I think it's the norm, actually ;)

1horatio · 05/01/2017 16:43

(Not thatbpeople don't appreciate an update) ;)

Good luck.

Hard not to grow up cool with a name like Harrrison. Love.

Eden is really simple and elegant. Also suits a woman just as well as a child. I like the shortenings for Callista- Calla, Call, Callie. Actually really like Calla on its own too.

I would avoid names like Wilf and Pearl- uber hipster. Which is fine if you are into real ale, obscure (crap) bands, beards, vinyl, checks and love being 'unique' (aka indentikit).

10Betty10 · 05/01/2017 18:39

I've just noticed how harsh that sounds!! Oops!! It's just I've met a fair few hipster babies with those type of names!!

BridgetDarcy · 05/01/2017 19:00

We have an Ophelia. I think it's the prettiest Shakespearean name. She forever gets complimented on it. So unique and suits her perfectly. It's rarely shortened.

BridgetDarcy · 05/01/2017 19:03

I really dislike Harrison. It's v popular in the last few years but I don't get it. It sounds like a made up name to me.

I've never heard of Rusty before.

Raphael is nice.

MollyHuaCha · 05/01/2017 19:10

Raphael - nice
Harrison - not keen, I prefer more sophisticated names than this
Ioan - ok, but I think he will spend his life spelling it out for people!
Wilf - quite nice, but sounds like it should be Wilfred
Rusty - sorry, but this sounds to me like a great name for a pet!

Callista - not keen, but it's 'ok'
Vivia - ditto
Eden - not that keen
Mirabel - quite nice
Pearl - not for me
Ophelia - lovely, I like this name the most from yr list

Have fun deciding Smile

Raphael or Harrison.

Eden for girl.

RenovatingHouseWithKids · 05/01/2017 19:52

betty you made me chuckle. I'm far too un-trendy to be a hipster! Point taken :)

sarcasm how am I mean to know if your post is sincere or sarcastic 😉

Would anyone else worry with the name Ophelia about it being turned into "a feel of your" by mean teenage boys? I do love it so much it's beautiful and I really wanted to use it for last DD but a friend's husband said something along those lines immediately and one poster on this thread said she thought it was a definite for getting the mickey taken. I think it'd only be the teen years that would be of concern...

And has anyone else mistaken Vivia for vulva?

MOISTGUSSET · 05/01/2017 19:59

My inner teen always hears 'I'll feel ya' when I see or hear the name Ophelia. Always.

😳

Jenjen18 · 05/01/2017 19:59

My baby girls name is Mirabel :)

RenovatingHouseWithKids · 05/01/2017 20:04

It's lovely jen. How has it been taken to by everyone? I'm aware some people (i.e. my mum!) might find it unusual. I like unusual but simple, which I think it is.

Mirabel is lovely. I agree, why isn't this more popular? It's so lovely!

Jenjen18 · 05/01/2017 20:27

Ppl seem to love it although it's not a common name.. I kept her name a secret throughout my pregnancy just because I didn't want anyone to comment on the name.. I simply love it and glad we chose it for her..

1horatio · 05/01/2017 20:29

jen smart decision.

Doesn't it mean 'wonderful'?

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 05/01/2017 20:32

Personally I find bel/belle names to be just too frilly. I think Eden is the nicest of your girls' names.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 05/01/2017 20:34

Raphael from the boys' list.

I'm not sure what it means tbh. I think it's a plum/some fruit but my husband and I picked the name as we both agreed on the name simultaneously.. It was either mirabelle or Mirabel but we found that Mirabelle sounds a bit like a Disney princess ... 😅

1horatio · 05/01/2017 20:52

jen

Mirabel is apparently a version of Mirabelle (which means wonderful according to behindthename). And you're correct, it is a really tasty, small and round fruit. Also great to use for compote or jam.

Jenjen18 · 05/01/2017 21:09

Thanks for the wonderful info :)

Barnes79 · 05/01/2017 21:13

Vivia does make me think of lady-bits, but not sure why...

Rusty reminds me of a lady who, I think, used to be an agony aunt or something on This Morning or GMTV or something similar.

thebakerwithboobs · 05/01/2017 21:17

Rusty Lee!!! Loved Rusty Lee!

octoberfarm · 05/01/2017 22:00

Adore Raphael and Eden, and like Harrison a lot too. Haven't heard of Callista before but I think I prefer Calla or Callie, though it is a lovely name on its own.

I'm afraid I'm another one that read Vivia as vulva though, sorry! Grin
