Fraser?

I know a Fraser who gets called Fraz.

iklboo · 23/10/2016 21:55

BIL3 is called George. His mates call him Gee.

YuckYuckEwwww · 23/10/2016 21:59

If it's a common name like George they might also end up being "big George" or "little George"

DD2 is "big her name " because a family friend has a little her name

I also know a SarahWithA"H" - everyone in her family calls her that, all of it, apparently goes back to her birth announcement and the full sentance stuck

It's really strange that none of my boys have ever been called by shortened versions of their names except by me! Their friends all call them by their proper names. They must have unimaginative friends!

Embolio · 23/10/2016 22:23

And anything short will be lengthened Grin hughey, johnny, lukey. It just happens. You can enforce it while they are little but once they get to school you haven't a hope - plus, they may well have their own preference which may or may not be in line with yours.

I'm wracking my brain and I can't think of a single name that there's no short/familiar form of. Maybe pick a name with more than one short form so you can at least have a preferred option? So Daniel could be Dan or Danny, Katherine could be Katy, Kat, Kath, Kathy (you get the idea)

PaperdollCartoon · 23/10/2016 22:39

My colleagues brother is called Hugo and they calls him Hugs.

DulliDulli · 23/10/2016 22:44

My Luke is a Lukey to us lol! Although I have an Oliver that we do not shorten, although some of his friends do at school. We just use the full version at home. We have insisted his teachers keep it to Oliver as he doesn't actually like it shortened but it is up to him to correct his friends if he wishes to. Basically what I am saying is you can use what ever name you want, stick to it at home and allow them to use their own version when with friends.

Bb90 · 23/10/2016 23:26

I think any name can be shortened and people will call you what they want, I have a long-ish name () shortened to (*). However I always get called B

My mum tells a story of when she was a teenager, friends would phonr the house asking for het by her shortened name. Apparently her mum used to say "There's nobody here of that name" and put the phone down!Grin

unicornsarenotjustforchristmas · 24/10/2016 08:56

I have a Joseph and a Hugo and neither has been shortened so far (they are both in primary school)

Just go for whatever you like. My parents picked names that they didn't think could be shortened but both my sister and I have managed it

elQuintoConyo · 24/10/2016 11:54

I had a schoolfriend called Mark who ended up being called Johnny after a condom incident.

Johnny Clueless was his full name.

It stuck and he still refers to himself as that!

MrsHathaway · 24/10/2016 12:09

DB and I both have "unshortenable" names.

Nope. Children do what they like.

SoupDragon · 24/10/2016 12:12

Kay and Jay can't be shortened.

Pretty much everything else can be.

OdinsLoveChild · 24/10/2016 12:21

I went to school with some children whose parents chose their names because they couldn't be shortened. Unfortunately the children at school had other ideas and actually lengthened their names think Ann turned into Fanny Annie and later just Annie. The parents were disgusted and always made a fuss which no one listened to. In fact one sibling actually goes by the longer nick name now permanently.

Go for the names you like no matter how long.

Hugo is lovely Smile

MrsHathaway · 24/10/2016 12:52

Ludo is posh and generally not messed with.

SoupDragon · 24/10/2016 12:54

It is also a fairly dull board game :o
