Kay and Jay can't be shortened.

Pretty much everything else can be.

I knew an adult Paul who was known as Barney.
This was because, when he played football, apparently he was not a good shot and 'couldn't hit an open barn door'.
This was further elaborated to Barney Bear, and sometimes even Big Bumbling Barney Bear.
I bet his parents thought Paul was a good bet!

happydays00 · 24/10/2016 16:53

Hugh
Max
Ben

These are obviously shortened versions of Maximilian and Benjamin so not sure if that would bother you..

GeorgeTheThird · 24/10/2016 16:55

George. No one messes with George.

Boredomismyenemy · 24/10/2016 17:02

My son has a one syllable name, granted no one has ever shortened it. However he does have 3 or 4 nicknames with his name lengthened! You just can't control these things, his friends all use the longer names!

SisterViktorine · 24/10/2016 17:06

TBH you have little control over what other people call your kids. DH has a couple of mates who, even in adulthood, are called something completely different to their real name (think Frederick being known to all as Dave) because of some childhood incident that 'stuck'.

My child is called Oscar outs self and we only ever call him that and didn't let family call him Ozzy. His best friend, and by his influence a growing range of others, call him Oss.

Just name him something you love and YOU call him that. You just have to let other people do whatever they will do.

cheapandcheerful · 24/10/2016 17:08

I know a Joseph, Hugo, Samuel and Thomas, none of which are shortened.

InfiniteCurve · 24/10/2016 17:11

Any name that can't obviously be shortened can be lengthened!
I think you have to resign yourself - you can call you children what you like but their friends may call them anything. And they may prefer a different version of the name to your choice!

peggyundercrackers · 24/10/2016 17:16

George will get shortened to dode, very common in Scotland.

BikeRunSki · 24/10/2016 17:41

I know an Ivan who has managed to get to 40ish without any first name based nicknames. Plenty of others mind.

Luciferbox · 24/10/2016 17:45

My name can't be shortened, so it was lengthened.

MyGiddyUncle · 24/10/2016 18:45

I think some people will shorten any name.

Ds1 is called AJ day to day (Adam John on BC). So already goes by a nickname.

There are two people I know that call him 'Ayj' Hmm

WitchesGlove · 24/10/2016 18:50

I've never heard Hugo shortened or Francis for little boys.

FreshHorizons · 24/10/2016 18:51

Pointless even trying! We thought we had one and then he is called something with his surname and he likes it.
Once they have the name you lose control and they have the choice - if they want the long name that is what they will have, but equally they might shorten it.
I shorten mine- it is my choice and I am not bothered what my mother thinks!
Don't overthink it. Have what you like.

FreshHorizons · 24/10/2016 18:53

Quite likely to be Hughie and Frankie (or Frank)

Pigeonpost · 24/10/2016 18:56

All names can be shortened. I have a Rory and he gets called Rors.

NuggetofPurestGreen · 24/10/2016 19:00

Why do people keep saying James? I don't know any Jameses that aren't Jim or Jimmy

FreshHorizons · 24/10/2016 19:02

I know a Jamie but when he got to 8yrs he insisted on James from everyone, and so that is what he got.

FreshHorizons · 24/10/2016 19:04

InfiniteCurve has it right.

NerrSnerr · 24/10/2016 19:05

I wouldn't worry- you'll only get a few years of correcting people, you can of course always call them their full name but the child will decide themselves what nickname they want when they're at school.

OhPuddleducks · 24/10/2016 19:07

My boy has a traditional name that can be shortened in loads of different ways. We've always called him the full version and corrected people who shorten it (pet hate of mine - people often shorten my name when they don't really know me that we'll even if I've introduced myself with my full name) and now he corrects them. Think "I'm not Jimmy, I'm just only James", which is quite cute from a 2 yo.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 24/10/2016 19:09

Have bad news about Connor. We know one quite well and everyone calls him Con.

Kim
Kit - can see someone has beaten me to this one Smile
Rex
Fred

derektheladyhamster · 24/10/2016 19:13

My ds is 16 and has a 3 syllable name that has never been shortened, even though there are several diminutives. So just call him what you like

60sname · 24/10/2016 19:21

My parents tried this. So I have a very dull name that is sometimes lengthened. DS therefore has an unusual name with myriad nickname possibilities Grin

midsomermurderess · 24/10/2016 20:38

If a name can't be shortened it most probably can be lengthened, e.g. for Eve, Evie. You can't really stop people messing about with names.
