Just use the name you want and be firm about everyone using it. I know a 13 year old Alexander who has never been Alex/Sandy/Xander. Both he and his parents are insistent on this, and give very short shrift to anyone who tries to use these names. He does have a nickname based on his surname though.

A friend called her son Luke so it wouldn't be shortened but people lengthen it to Lukey.

Adam=Adamski
Heidi=Heidickles
Mary=Lairy

Some nicknames I know that are long and/or hideous!

My grandfather was called Rex, on the basis that it couldn't be shortened. He was known as Reggie as his life. Nicknames evolve whether you like it or not.

Many names have traditional shortenings that are hard to avoid, but some listed here with possible short forms are not right. A John for example is very unlikely to be called 'Jo' as 'Jo/e' is a shortening for names with a 'jo' sound, which John doesn't have.

I think a Hugo isn't that likely to be called Hugh as that's a different name, but it is the same sound so possible I guess. The issue for the OP is whether she actually likes short names as the best way to avoid a name being shortened is to choose a short name, so something like John, Ian, Paul, Guy or Mark? Some two syllable names might work like Giles, Leon, Martin or Jarvis

HopperBusTicket · 23/10/2016 20:49

Fraser? Although I do call mine Frasey-woo-woo. But I suspect he won't put up with it much longer!

I think all names that are three syllables will end up shortened but people can manage two, so Nathaniel might end up being Nat but Nathan will be Nathan.

I think you should just choose a name you like and then accept that it's not 'your' name and just go with the flow.
I come up with new nicknames for my three boys about four times a week. It's fun.

Essentially names of one syllable. Names of two syllables, even if you think they can't possibly be shortened, will be. Get used to correcting them Every Single Time and they may eventually pay attention (or they may not).

Ollycat · 23/10/2016 21:11

My teenage son has friends with many of the names on the list and they all get shortened / changed in some way!

Harry - Hazza
Luke - Lukey
Oscar - Ozzy
Oliver - Ollie - Ol
Joe - JoJo

And so on - I could go through most of the names suggested with ds's friends!! Call your ds the name you like and then call him by that yourself - other then that it's beyond your control!

Potcallingkettle · 23/10/2016 21:11

Seth fits your vibe and unlikely to be shortened. Other nicknames may spring up though.

My DP is called Todd, can't be shortened but does sometimes get lengthened (Toddy, Toddles) Nicknames can happen whatever name you choose!

SoftSheen · 23/10/2016 21:19

Hugo isn't generally shortened in my experience.

Consider also: George, Henry, Adam, Oscar, Felix, Luke.

Beware, though, he may end up being known by some random nickname unrelated to whatever you decide to call him Grin

PatriciaHolm · 23/10/2016 21:22

Everything can be shortened, or nicknamed. Even the shortest of names. Go with a name you love and just deal with the fact that they will get a nickname at some point. (my Hugo is Hugs, or Hug-0, to his friends!)
