What's the strangest reason for rejecting a name you've heard?

Chatting to DP about girls names for DC2. I suggested a classic name which just happens to be the name of both of his grandmothers, and then suggested a shortening we'd use day to day. Let's say it's Elizabeth, with us actually using Betty/Bets.

He agreed this is a great name, in keeping with DD1's name, a lovely touch to use a family name, and he really likes the shortening Bets. However, an old friend of ours for some very obscure reason refers to his own mother as "Bets". This is a friend who now lives in another country and whose mother we've never actually met. But for this reason, DP thinks we should veto the name because it's "a bit weird"

Anyone got an stupider reasons?

I don't think that's strange....he associates the name with his mate's Mum so can't imagine his child called that.

My DH wouldn't have the name Violet because it sounded like "Violent" he also said no to another name which I've forgotten because it sounded bad in my accent and his too.

I can't think of any off the top of my head of personally, but I suppose people can reject names for the following reasons.
Bad connotations.
Doesn't go with the surname.
Too popular.
Already used by a family member
Others saying they dislike it. Although I'd be more inclined to use it out of spite.
You could go on forever

My DH won't have Eliza because he thinks it sounds like "here lies a..."

I quite liked Alexander, shortened to Sandy. But that's the name of MIL's dog.

I also liked Victoria as a girls name, but that would make her initials V.D.

That it sounds like a word it sounds nothing at all like.

Eli - sounds like 'he lie'.

I once read on one of these threads that a name would make someone gay !

When my sister was pg with DNephew, we sat and went through all the baby name books we had and she couldn't find a single one she like.....She worked in a nursery at the time, and her answer to every suggestion was "oh no, there's a horrible kid at nursery called Oliver" or "There's a kid at nursery that always wipes snot on me who's called James - can't have my baby reminding me of snot" She did eventually settle on a name....and funnily enough, she's never looked after a kid with the same name at nursery!

Actually, that reminds me of hearing Isaac described as I suck once...

I liked the name Owen/Eoin which fitted in with my irish/Welsh roots. DH said he didn't like the name because he was in school with somebody with that name who always wore trainers to school rather than shoes. WTF has that got to do with the price of bread

My other half has vetoed Madeleine because of the abducted little girl - gutted because I love it but to him he thinks of that story when he hears the name and doesn't think it will change when its his little girl. Fair enough - we need a name we both love!

DH didn't like Scarlet as it was too much like Charlotte.

2 years later, after KMs second baby as we're expecting DC2- "how about Charlotte?"

I vetoed Gabrielle as I can't stand that BBC Sport Gabby Logan.

My DH vetoed a name for DD (which I loved and had special meaning for me as it is similar to my deceased mother's name) because his sister's husband's sister has a daughter called that name. Honestly, if I could go back in time I'd be a lot more forceful about it actually. It is quite a well used classic name - it would definitely not have been weird to use it.

But anyway, I do love DD's name and we used my mum's name as a middle name, so I guess it all worked out in the end. Still.

Oh yes and he vetoed Annabell because my cousin has a daughter called Anna.

I loved the name Óran for my son but my friend told me it sounded too much like moron, I was put off using it forever based on that horrible word. I have met many wonderful Óran/Ódhran since and no one seems to have besmirched them.

Oh and DH had a romantic tussle unwittingly in an apartment room with a glass block wall with one of his colleagues, in front of some other colleagues with a woman with a girls name I really wanted to use. They had gotten ribbed so much over the years that he would never have used the name.

Then 2 of my best friends used it so it all worked out in the end.

My SIL said Declan was a "gay" name and if we named DS2 that she would never call him by that name. I didn't call him Declan, but only because it was on a long list of names.

Mind you she also told me DS1would be gay because he held hands with his friend when he was 2 and he is - so maybe she knows something I don't know! Or she's just weird.

Dh refused to use Sophie because it sounds like sofa

My cousin has a daughter called Ella-May. I really have difficulty calling her by her full name as I think it sounds like LMA, which as an anaesthetist, I use to put patients to sleep!

Personally I think they sound quite different but I don't knock people out for a living.

Scarlet was vetoed by DP as he thought of 'scarlet woman' even though his fave character in nashville is called Scarlet!
Luckily baby is a boy anyway.

When we did decide on a name for baby his family tried to liken the initials to mad cow disease (his initials will be nothing like it) but it did make me wonder if people really do think like that and surprise that his family, rather than saying our name is nice, immediately tried to tell us he would be bullied because his name might have an association with a disease. I wouldn't want him to have initials STD for example but I guess I'm naive as I've never been bullied for my name.

A friend vetoed Gabrielle because it made her think Scabby Gabby ?!?
