What's the strangest reason for rejecting a name you've heard?

Chatting to DP about girls names for DC2. I suggested a classic name which just happens to be the name of both of his grandmothers, and then suggested a shortening we'd use day to day. Let's say it's Elizabeth, with us actually using Betty/Bets.

He agreed this is a great name, in keeping with DD1's name, a lovely touch to use a family name, and he really likes the shortening Bets. However, an old friend of ours for some very obscure reason refers to his own mother as "Bets". This is a friend who now lives in another country and whose mother we've never actually met. But for this reason, DP thinks we should veto the name because it's "a bit weird" Confused

Anyone got an stupider reasons?

Dh vetoed Dominic as someone at school was referred to as 'doms-a-dick'. I vetoed Lucas as I refer to someone as 'luc-arse' he totally deserves it though Grin

Chinks123 · 27/05/2016 21:40

Some of these are brilliant, especially it sounds like eye-sack and reminded him of a boy who wore trainers instead of shoes Grin

My mother wouldn't give me a middle name she really wanted (Grace) as my first name starts with E and she thought if I had EG I couldn't then marry someone with the last name Gordon as I would be EGG Confused

But that left me with the initials ET. So...rather than possibly have me named EGG she definitely named me ET Hmm Still don't understand it, and I've never met anyone with the last name Gordon! Have had a lot of sniggers at my initials though.

I know a child who would have been Aaron. A few days before he was born his mum told his dad to "keep your hair on", and the baby to be became Carl.

I am 14 weeks pregnant with our first baby. DH and I are keeping the name discussions private, in case of many of the issues mentioned above! At least this way we only have to deal with our own crazy reasoning rather than our whole family's.

Our problem is that we have come up with two boy names that we love. Shouldn't be a problem, we should just use one and save the other for a potential second son, or use it as a middle name. Problem is, the names are George and Harrison... ConfusedGrin

So one of them is going to have to be vetoed!

swancourt · 27/05/2016 22:19

DH won't call any girl baby we have 'Orla' because there was an 'Orlaith' on Big Brother about 15 years ago who had big boobs, and he doesn't think it's right to be reminded of somebody's boobs when he's talking to his daughter Hmm

I have pointed out that he wouldn't think of this when it was his daughter's name, and he has accepted that, but still vetoes the name. GRR.

Katapolt · 27/05/2016 22:51

There was a boy at dh's school called Richard John Uren or Dick Toilet Piss as he was known... I bet he wished one of his parents had vetoed that name...

BikeRunSki · 27/05/2016 23:08

Katrapolt, that's nothing, I had a teacher called Richard William Fallas!!

Katapolt · 27/05/2016 23:12

Really?! ShockShockShock

Heebiejeebie · 27/05/2016 23:28

I wanted Hebe - but my husband said she would always be Heebiejeebie - hence my MN name.

BikeRunSki · 27/05/2016 23:36

Really Kattapolt. The thing is, the told is his middle name and showed us his driving license. I've never known any other of my teachers' middle names.

TheFutureMrsBloom · 27/05/2016 23:37

I liked the name Otis but my mum said it was the name of a lift manufacturer. I now have a little giggle every time I get in a lift with DD.

Hushabyelullaby · 27/05/2016 23:46

I remember having a name conversation with DH when we were going through options, and asking him what he thought of the name Tayah, he vetoed it as he said it sounds like a Geordie saying 'tyre'.

friedfanny · 28/05/2016 00:53

Various vetoes happened with us

Lucy - DH thought it sounded like loo-seat
Magnus - DH thought it sounded like maggots.
Amanda - because of an episode of Friends where Rachel thinks Amanda is a code for A-man-derr when trying to find Chandlers dad who's transitioned to woman.
Various first name and middle name combinations because of what the initials would spell with our Surname.

Also because we didn't know the gender of the kids until delivery we had two names picked for the first child. When I was expecting my second child it was assumed that we would use the unused girls name and 'just had to pick another boys name' but I didn't want to use the unused girls name. I felt that it was my sons 'girl' name. I know it doesn't make sense to anyone else but it did to me so the process took a long time. We finally got a name picked in the last few weeks and it was a girl.

Boolovessulley · 28/05/2016 06:58

My friend told her sister not to use Jacob because it reminded her of Jacob's crackers.

BikeRunSki · 28/05/2016 08:15

My sister didn't use Anna, because I'd once said if I ever had a dd I'd call her Anna. At the time, I had no DC, or any intention of having any.

When I did have a DD (8 years later) we didn't call her Anna for other (boring) reasons.

BikeRunSki · 28/05/2016 08:21

DH's grandma died a few days before I found out I was pg for the second time. I asked him if he'd like to call the baby after her (I quite liked her name). He said "You can't call a baby Grandma". Then he said he'd only ever called her Grandma, so there was no reason to use her first name.

isthatpoisontoo · 28/05/2016 08:28

My DH rejected Benedict because "it has dick in it." Fortunately I didn't have to argue the point as he then reminded me we're having a girl.

CutYourHairAndGetAJob · 28/05/2016 08:46

Dp vetoed Louisa because the shortening 'lou' makes him think of a toilet Sad

Raines100 · 28/05/2016 08:56

DH vetoed Alexander and Dominic 'because they're girl's names'. I was like Hmm

DSiL considered Sage for her DC, and DH just ripped the piss out of her. He kept calling the bump 'Sage n Onion' or 'Stuffing'. Fortunately, she had a boy,

Groovee · 28/05/2016 09:11

I vetoed Isla because it was the name of a child's dog in the nursery I worked in!

JennyOnAPlate · 28/05/2016 09:22

I vetoed lucas because it sounds like mucous Hmm

JenniferAnistonsHair · 28/05/2016 09:55

DH vetoed Madeleine because he thought everyone would automatically think "McCann" when hearing the name.

He also vetoed Violet because he could only picture Violet Beauregard from Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, & he didn't want a bratty child! Not sure it really works that way... 🙈

Chinks123 · 28/05/2016 12:09

Lucas was on my list until this thread Sad never thought it sounded like mucus till now

TroysMammy · 28/05/2016 12:15

Ellie-May always makes me think of the Clampitts in Beverley Hillbillies.

228agreenend · 28/05/2016 12:21

When I was in infant school, a Sylvia pushed a friend of the climbing frame and she broke her arm. Consequently, Sylvia was automatically vetoed.
