The one name we chickened out of using as a first name for our eldest daughter was Winifred. She got it as a middle name and has a ridiculously popular/common first name. I kind of regret not being brave enough to go for Winifred.

For me it was Julian.
It was one of my favourite names for DS1 who is now 10. But everyone made faces and told me it was "gay".

Mika - Becuase everybody will think it's short for Michaela or that she's named after the singer.
Autumn - Because i just don't think i'm brave enough to use a season, rather than a 'proper' name.
Lilly - Because everybody will say it's spelt wrong.
Berrie - Becuase Barry? Cherry? NO!
Zola - Becuase everybody will mistake it for Lola and it's just a little too out there.
Jana - Becuase nobody will know how to pronounce it.

I adore them all, and they will probably still be potential middle names, but i don't think i'm brave enough for the first names

He also vetoed Jemima on the basis of 'puddle duck'. I would totally have used it.

Decca for a girl. Adore it, but I wouldn't even mention it to OH because he might just faint

I don't get this. I called DS the most gorgeous name I could think of. It was my idea, but DH was equally enthusiastic, and no one else knew until after he was born. I certainly didn't rush about 'auditioning' names with friends and family to see whether they met some arbitrary group criteria. It's Biblical, but at the very unusual end.

And I know several children with names listed above - I know two child Magnuses, several Constances, an adult and child Isolde/Iseult, several child Zacs, a child Florian and a Fabian. I know an adult Ariadne. My four year old has two Jesses in his pre-school.

These are in no way 'way out' - what exactly is frightening you about using them? There seem to be a lot of highly conservative DHs vetoing things. If family told me a name was 'too gay', I'd be considering hiring new family, tbh.

To be fair though, the child is half your DP's. So they have to be able to have a veto too; that's how it works in most relationships. It's about finding one which suits both of you - and a lot of DPs appear to be quite conservative.

Bear in mind who actually has to be brave if you use a name that appears to belong to the wrong gender, has to be spelled every time, is always mispronounced or which makes the kindest and most polite person in the world have to control a smile when they hear it..........

None of the names on this thread need 'bravery' imo. They're all lovely names that aren't overused as so many others. In fact, I prefer many of them to the many Ellies, Evies, Harrys, Archies, Ollies that I hear so often.

I agree - there is too much vetoing of names on here, we should all be more supportive of names outside the top 100.

There's much vetoing of names in RL, not just MN.

The reason I vetoed Constance is because she might not be constant. For the same reason I would hate to be called Grace. I'm not graceful!
