If any?

I would love Tracy as a boys name, but DH vetoed it!

I also love Jesse for a boy, but again DH doesn't like it - boo hiss rah

Any from you?

Most of mine were vetoed by my DH for being 'pretentious' and 'weird' etc.

jellycat1 · 14/04/2016 14:29

I loved Rex but was worried about the dog connection! Blaise is DS1's middle name. DH reallywanted it as his first name but i thought it too racey!

jellycat1 · 14/04/2016 14:32

Oh and LOVE Jemima LB but got exactly same response as you did from DH. All my proposed girls names are mentioned on this thread and all were vetoed so it was lucky we had another boy!

JeanGenie23 · 14/04/2016 14:43

Some fantastic names on here. My vetoed choices were not far out names really, but we live in a very hipster place and DP just didn't want to be 'one of them' Hmm

I really Love Asher!!

I once met a parent in the park who had a child called Phoenix. I thought that was amazing but I don't think I could ever see me using it, I'm far too boring for that.

I really wanted Nora but DP said no. He also refused to consider April.

We have Kit in mind if the next one happens to be a boy. But I also love Rafe and Patrick. Not very uncommon or unusual at all Blush

DerelictMyBalls · 14/04/2016 15:22

Nope, don't get it this whole 'bravery' thing. If you love the name, use it! My son has an unusual name and if I have another one it will get an unusual name, too!

heron98 · 14/04/2016 15:47

The only one who needs to be brave is the poor kid who's saddled with the name.

I have an "experimental" name. I hate it. I especially hated it as a child when I had to introduce myself and was invariably met with "WTF" expressions.

I would never put my own child through that.

DerelictMyBalls · 14/04/2016 16:11

Many of these are in no way 'experimental', though. Jemima, Constance, Rupert.

I do feel sorry for people with made-up names, though.

ABitAsleep · 14/04/2016 16:16

I love the name Posy, but i wouldn't saddle my child with that name...'Posy, unfortunate, but true'

RedToothBrush · 14/04/2016 16:17

DS has an unusual name.

He got lucky that my taste, although unusual is not crazy unusual. Unlike DH.

If DS ever decides he doesn't like his name he has a 'sensible' middle name he can use. DH got vetoed to ensure that. DS also had a lucky escape given DH's alternative choices.

For example DH is currently saying how much he loves the Icelandic name Þorbjörn (Thor's Bear). We have no Icelandic blood. We are not having another child.

Teacaddy · 14/04/2016 16:51

Indeed. No one is advocating a mass move in favour of Nevaeh-Maebella or Tianii-Makkayla-Lou, or I don't think they are! Just that there is life beyond Jack and Olivia.

My personal opinion is that there is something disturbingly parochial and gang mentality-ish about the head-shaking and faux-pity for the 'poor child who will have to bear the brunt of being called X' - when in fact the people doing the head-shaking are the ones creating the environment where anything mildly unusual is pilloried. My four year old has a Jesse, an Ocean, a Tejal and an Abeni in his pre-school. To him, those are just things people are called.

carabos · 14/04/2016 18:09

I'm far too old to be worrying about baby names, but love to lurk in this topic. I love the name Sharon, but I think it's unusable.

Shemozzle · 14/04/2016 23:57

I agree wholeheartedly with teacaddy. It's usually the same people mocking names and telling people no, who then list the same names. Both my girls names have been placed in various mumsnet name hate groups. Too poncy, too posh, too American, too cutesy, name for a cat or dog. I don't care. I was warned I was too working class to use poncy names too, but I'm glad I didn't listen.

manicinsomniac · 15/04/2016 00:25

It isn't about whether they're 'experimental' or not. Some of the names I listed are very popular (eg Madison, Aaliyah). There are a whole host of reasons why I wasn't 'brave' enough to use these names, none of them to do with popularity.

jobrum · 15/04/2016 00:33

Una. Love Una.

KeyserSophie · 15/04/2016 00:36

Jean Baptiste.

You've got to be French I think. We're not.

Voteforpedr0 · 15/04/2016 00:39

Xavier. just loved it but chickened out

mammmamia · 15/04/2016 01:00

I know two xaviers plus loads of kids with names on this thread

My own list leans towards Greek names or other foreign names to which I have no cultural connection

Atticus
Xanthe
Ines
Genevieve (love love)
Soleil

DerelictMyBalls · 15/04/2016 10:27

Excellent post, Teacaddy

Carabos - I love Sharon, too! Grin

Twinkie84 · 15/04/2016 10:34

We named our first born Xavier!

We loved it the first time we heard! He loves his name and everyone always comments on a nice but unusual name he has! I'm so glad I named him that!

My second son is called Tobias so not as unusual but you don't hear many boys named that either

Wink
carabos · 15/04/2016 10:51

Derelict I love the way Sharon sounds and all the Sharons I have known (lots in my age group) have been gorgeous and clever and generally fab!

Sophronia · 15/04/2016 14:33

I like Sharon too Grin

KeyserSophie · 15/04/2016 15:18

I love Sharon. It's a really strong name and all the RL Sharons I know are awesome. It's got to be due a come back.

smartyclogs · 15/04/2016 16:28

Lark.
I heard it once in America on a teenage girl. Love it.

Sage.
For a boy.

Seem to have a 'hippyish' streak.

OhForTheLoveOfGin · 15/04/2016 21:55

Im all in favour of unusual names. DP vetoed Hera for DD. My imaginary twin boys will be called Gaius and Galen over DPs dead body

StarkyTheDirewolf · 15/04/2016 23:51

Winter. I'm 8+1 Dh agrees. Poor kid. Dh suggested Blue, only got vetoed because he doesn't like Jay-Z.
