Ev-a-lyn

Jux · 15/11/2015 20:17

From Home counties. Eve-lyn.

I have heard Ever-lyn but always thought it was from the Bucket-types who just wanted to make it sound posh.

EV-a-lin for a girl (e.g. Evelyn Glennie).
EVE-a-lin for a boy (e.g. Evelyn Waugh).

What I have never heard and am always bemused by on the hundreds of threads here on this topic, is the two-syllable versions so many people claim to use / hear - I have only ever heard three syllables.

I've lived in various parts of England and speak RP.

OldGreyCat · 15/11/2015 20:27

Eve-lyn.
Kent.

TriSarahTops · 15/11/2015 20:29

I'm a little puzzled by the Eve-lyn pronunciations - I'd never considered this version. Would those people who pronounce Evelyn this way also pronounce Evelina as Eve-lina (just curious)?

I always assumed the two names should have a similar pronunciation, so for me it is Ev-a-lyn (and Ev-a-lina)

WishIWasWonderwoman · 15/11/2015 20:32

I would say Eve-lyn for a boy or man, Ever-lyn for a girl or woman.

lottiegarbanzo · 15/11/2015 20:58

Oh yes and, to add further credibility to my 'three syllable' claim, I give you 'Evil Lynn', cartoon nemesis of He Man. Grin
