I often call my ds Sonny Boy, but only in private now (he is 15) personally I think it would be a slightly embarrassing name for school, work etc. Plus I think that there are advantages in having a name with formal and informal forms, for example I have a 'family' name and a 'rest of my life' name, and my dd uses her formal name for school and the short form for friends/family. I can't see that a 'Sonny' gets much choice, so just for that I'd discount it.

Plus you can use it as a nickname for a boy regardless, so it's a bit of a wasted naming opportunity I think.
