Cartoon dog or filmstar?

Really can't decide if this is dreadful or tastefully unusual.

SunnaStrangeInTheNeighbourhood · 28/10/2014 07:24

Always makes me think of an Alsation dog, sorry.

ClariceBeanthatsme · 28/10/2014 07:25

I'm willing to admit I thought of it whilst reading Harry and his Dinosaurs. Blush

was hoping for a Brideshead Revisited feel though.

My ds is Rex. I get comments all the time, but always nice ones.

ALittleFaith · 28/10/2014 08:18

Say no more, mon amour Grin to be fair, a kid born now probably won't get many references to Empire Records but that's what I think of.

diddlediddledumpling · 28/10/2014 08:21

doesn't it mean king? that would put me off.

wingcommandergallic · 28/10/2014 08:22

That's good to hear. How did he cope with pronouncing it? I know R is one of the last sounds children learn.

  1. dog
  2. the sleaziest guy I ever met

It's a no from me!

wingcommandergallic · 28/10/2014 08:25

Yes. It means king. I think it sounds strong and capable.

We also like Max but DP wants Maximilian and I think Max sounds boyish.

The other names on our list are quite different.

Dinosaur!

I don't like it as a human name, though.

Anjou · 28/10/2014 08:43

Love it! Great name for a baby, toddler, teen and adult.

How many people ACTUALLY know a dog called Rex?

devoncreamtea · 28/10/2014 08:54

Ace name - Rex Harrison. Say no more!

Don't listen to the dogs name doom sayers, 2 of my children are actually named after dogs -( accidentally, just liked these 2 names and on further inspection they turned out to be the names of my mums best friend's dogs when I was growing up...must've crept in to my subconscious!) A name is a name - you're not calling him 'jack russell' or 'labradoodle'.

Rex is cool, cute, strong and unusual - I would go for it! My 'dog name' daughters are Meg and Bess - so not exactly bonkers either...

TheFillyjonk · 28/10/2014 08:58

I think of dinosaurs.

I also think of Oedipus Rex, a Greek tragedy about a man who unknowingly marries and spawns with his mother. Ends up having to stab his eyes out when he finds out who she is - very disturbing!

However, despite all that I think Rex would be quite a cool name for a little boy. Sounds kind of fearless and suave.

cindydog · 28/10/2014 08:58

Here in rural Ireland ,Rex is the name of every second collie sheepdog.

glittershoes · 28/10/2014 09:07

I have a Rex. I have only ever had one 'dog' comment and that was from a woman who had called her son Tyson 'after the boxer' so we had pretty different tastes anyway. andIwouldrathergivemysonadogsnamethannamehimafteraconvictedrapist

Interestingly every person under the age of about 20 who has commented has always raved about how cool a name it is. If you mention the dog thing then they stare at you blankly.

wingcommandergallic · 28/10/2014 09:14
Grin

Bit of a marmite name! I have never heard of a dog actually named Rex either. I get the impression it's quite an old association.

I've sneaked it onto the list of approved names on the fridge so DP has a bit of time to mull it over.
