I wouldn't call a pet Jezebel let alone my child. I hope this is a joke thread.

squoosh · 23/10/2014 19:51

I prefer Floozy.

ThursdayOfTheLivingDead · 23/10/2014 19:53

I think Jezebel is essentially an insult

JabberJabberJay · 23/10/2014 19:56

Dear lord, don't call your child Jezebel.

Religion aside, the name has entered common parlance as a synonym for Harlot.

Do you REALLY want your daughter to go through life with a name meaning Whore? Really?

moxon · 23/10/2014 19:59

Harlot and Harrow. Those kids.

GoryellaItsaSpoonerismGeddit · 23/10/2014 19:59

go for it. Or have it as a middle name. Scarlett would be a good first name.

Smartiepants79 · 23/10/2014 20:00

Associations aside it is pretty.
BUT it comes with huge baggage. It is essentially calling your child prostitute. Sorry.

BlueGreenHazelGreen · 23/10/2014 20:01

I'm sorry, objectively it is a pretty name but you just can't.

It's not some obscure religious reference it's a name which has passed into to common cultural usage.

Please, please don't - it would be cruel.

pregnantpause · 23/10/2014 20:01

I say no because I think it's cruel and people will judge her name before they know anymore about her.

Secondly tbh I think it is an ugly word.

Yes of course her parents would shorten it to bell or Jessie- everyone else, and any school child will plump for jezza.

My aunt named my cousin Isabelle, shortening it to bell- she didn't like izzy- guess what she's known as to everyone else?

ScrambledEggAndToast · 23/10/2014 20:03

You will never be able to escape those negative connotations, imagine the teasing at school. If you have to use it as a middle name and prepare for the fact that she will never tell anyone

WD41 · 23/10/2014 22:17

Don't be so ridiculous. This has to be a joke?

The bible associations may not phase you, but religious or otherwise most people know the connotations.

awfulomission · 23/10/2014 22:22

Really, no. There's even a song isn't there? 'Omg I hope she's not a Jezzie?'

There are some cracking Old Testament names, isn't Zillah one? I like that, bit different.

Sophronia · 23/10/2014 22:23

How about Jessabelle instead?

scopeisawesome123 · 23/10/2014 22:30

Dizzy rascal has a song called jezzabell awfulomission

I just wouldnt do that to my child not only because of the religious meaning but as others have said it is known as another word for whore.

MrsMcRuff · 23/10/2014 22:58

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with the names Lucretia or Adolf, either, but you'd have to be a certain kind of parent to lumber your child with them.

Having said that, there is a lovely middle-aged lady on the tills in a local supermarket whose name badge proclaims her to be Jezebel. Just thought I'd mention it!

BonnieWeeJeannieMcCall · 23/10/2014 23:25

Another definitely not from me.

bouncingbelle · 24/10/2014 00:31

Calling her Jezzie would lead to playground taunts of 'Jezzie the lezzie' as if Jezebel wasn't enough to put up with.

Call her jessica Isabel and use jessabel as her family nickname?

Bewooohooove · 24/10/2014 00:37

I'm not a guy so can I still answer?

It's awful

clary · 24/10/2014 00:44

Please don't call your daughter Jezebel.

I know a child called Cain which has "negative associations" (he killed his brother) and is not what I would choose but even that is not as bad. "She's a real Jezebel" - not nice.

mathanxiety · 24/10/2014 01:49

You don't have to know anything about religion or be involved in a religion to understand the (very) negative associations. You just have to speak English.

SurfsUp1 · 24/10/2014 09:18

If you called it across a playground people would think you were insulting your daughter! A bit like
"Come here Tart!' or "Floozy, wait your turn!"

R4roger · 24/10/2014 09:23

no way.

how about Floozy Grin?
Hussy

but not jezebel.

Caniaskaquestion · 24/10/2014 09:23

I have some sympathy because I also think it is a pretty name and it is a shame about the fact that it means 'whore' now. But the fact is it doesn't matter how much you insist it is just a pretty name, it means whore to everyone else. I would not in a thousand years give a girl this name.

3pigsinblanketsandasausagerole · 24/10/2014 09:25

They call her jezebel
Friends call her sket behind her back
She never knew the plot
She Was born off track......

EmilyGilmore · 24/10/2014 09:26

It's great. She might even get called Jizzy in the playground - which would be swell.
