Velvet for a baby name?

Hello, I am really loving the name Velvet for a girl. It has lots of lovely connotations for me from childhood being an avid fan of National and International Velvet and The Velveteen Rabbit.

I also love the Pixies song Velouria.

Am I missing something really obvious that will forever condemn future daughter to a life of cringe?

What do you think?

Not keen, tbh.

I prefer Taffeta Smile

Yes, you're missing the fact that it's not a name.

3pigsinblanketsandasausagerole · 10/09/2014 20:57

How about Velcro?

wimblehorse · 10/09/2014 20:57

Sorry but it makes me think of loo roll brands...

calzone · 10/09/2014 20:57

Would YOU like to be called Velvet?

I would not.

But Elizabeth Taylor in National Velvet was Velvet Brown.

As a brand of toilet paper, all good.

Not for an actual human being that has to go out in the world and be judged though.

Veronica
Valerie
Victoria
Vanessa

I wanted DD2 to be a Veronica but we already had another V name!

HaroldLloyd · 10/09/2014 20:59

I wouldn't like to be called velvet, I don't think.

HaroldLloyd · 10/09/2014 20:59

velma

CultureSucksDownWords · 10/09/2014 21:03

I immediately thought of the toilet roll... and not so much of the national velvet connection.

I imagine most people will dislike it as a name, but the point is whether you think it is the right name for you and your baby. I wouldn't want to name a child this, but I've come across other equally "out there" names, so you wouldn't be that extreme I suppose.

PolyesterBride · 10/09/2014 21:03

Her friends will call Vel - do you like that?

People will know how to pronounce it, which is good. But they will probably always say "you mean, like the fabric?", which could get annoying.

lornemalvo · 10/09/2014 21:04

I quite like it. I wouldn't want to be called velvet though.

AnotherStitchInTime · 10/09/2014 21:04

Seems a bit too porn star for my liking.

Looseleaf · 10/09/2014 21:06

I simply loved National Velvet but still not sure I would see it as a name outside of a book/fiction.

Nancy54 · 10/09/2014 21:08

I know someone called velvet!

Bunbaker · 10/09/2014 21:08

It does sound like a bit of a "glamour model" name. Sorry.

My first thought was Velvet Underground, but I am old.

RJnomore · 10/09/2014 21:09

Velvet, as in tipping the...???

crje · 10/09/2014 21:09

Nooooo
Its awful

SirChenjin · 10/09/2014 21:09

It's a loo roll brand name - you can't call your DD Velvet!!

sunnyrosegarden · 10/09/2014 21:10

Just googled to see if there were any Velvets around - there is a professional wrestler called Velvet Sky.

susiedaisy · 10/09/2014 21:10

I know one women in her late forties called velvet.

MerryMarigold · 10/09/2014 21:10

I quite like it as middle name. I thought of the fabric. I think it would sound great with a 3 syllable first name with an 'l' in it as well eg. Amelie Velvet

susiedaisy · 10/09/2014 21:12

Amelie velvet, that's a lovely name!Envy

sunnyrosegarden · 10/09/2014 21:13

Actually, there are a few on Facebook. Quite like it.
