Velvet for a baby name?

Hello, I am really loving the name Velvet for a girl. It has lots of lovely connotations for me from childhood being an avid fan of National and International Velvet and The Velveteen Rabbit.

I also love the Pixies song Velouria.

Am I missing something really obvious that will forever condemn future daughter to a life of cringe?

What do you think?

Sorry, but I just think it sounds daft.

Daddypigsgusset · 11/09/2014 13:04

Is hideous hth

CromerSutra · 11/09/2014 13:07

My friend's grown up dd is called Callico, Cally for short. Lovely name I think. I like velvet as a middle name.

MerryMarigold · 11/09/2014 13:09

Cromer, I want to have another baby now don't let dh hear that, and call it Callico. Fab name! Maybe I settle for a cat.

Zara8 · 11/09/2014 13:13

Nice as a middle name I think

But it really does conjure up toilet roll or stripper connotations as a first name

Sorry OPBlush

BetweenDogandWolf · 11/09/2014 13:36

I like it and suggested it to DH when I was pregnant with DD but he was totally against it.

DH also vetoed my middle name choice of Foxglove, which was met with derision when I mentioned it on here before, so maybe he had a point.

I'm sure I read a magazine with someone who had a baby called Velvet in when I was pregnant. DD is 7 now though and I don't know who it was.

drudgetrudy · 11/09/2014 14:22

Tipping the velvet-a Victorian euphemism for vulva. I personally would avoid.

ShoeWhore · 11/09/2014 14:26

I know a Velvet and she's lovely. Never heard anyone snigger about her name.

It's not my choice but if you like it OP then why not?

UriGeller · 11/09/2014 14:31

When I was a kid I was going to name my first born child Fuchsia Velvet. I still love it. Firstborn was a boy and so were the next two. I'd forgotten all about the name by the time I got my dd.

But, there is a processed cheese in US called Velveeta cheese. So I'd make sure your surname isn't something like it. Or Curtain.

atticusclaw · 11/09/2014 14:33

I don't think any name associated with oral sex is good for a child/human

Wheresmypassport · 11/09/2014 14:37

To me it doesn't sound like a name and I couldn't imagine shouting it across a park to my child without feeling embarrassed or without having a fluffy dog come up to me instead

NorksEnormous · 11/09/2014 14:37

I know a child called velvet, it's an awful name!! Please don't do it!

User54565644578 · 11/09/2014 14:39

I know a Velvet who's about 18 months now. Apart from an initial thought of "that's a bit unusual" I didn't think much of it, apart from it's quite cool. Also unusual without being really out-there (it's an often used word, after all). The only thing odd for me is that her older brother has a very classic, Thomas-the-Tank style name so the two don't really 'match' Grin

Serenitysutton · 11/09/2014 14:41

Oh dear no.what will velvet do for a living? Doesn't pass the barrister/ builder test

Mylovelylovelyhorse · 11/09/2014 15:05

She will be a lesbian stripper serenity. Obvs

It does fall firmly into the 'choose a word, any word at all and it can be a name' category but I still quite like it.

ShadowStar · 11/09/2014 16:12

Nicole Kidman got away with Satine - but wasn't that just the name of her courtesan character in Moulin Rouge? So not a name used by her (or her children) in real life....

OwlCapone · 11/09/2014 16:16

But Elizabeth Taylor in National Velvet was Velvet Brown.

And Martin Freeman in The Hobbit was Bilbo Baggins, that doesn't make Bilbo a good choice for a name.

OwlCapone · 11/09/2014 16:18

Michael Jackson got away with Blanket.

And you think that's a good example...?

OwlCapone · 11/09/2014 16:19

Also, Blanket's real name is Prince Michael Jackson II

squoosh · 11/09/2014 16:23

Frankly I'd rather be called Blanket than Prince Michael II.

watchingtheenglish · 11/09/2014 16:44

How about a Vervia OP?

outtolunchagain · 11/09/2014 16:45

Don't mind Velvet but prefer Violet

MackerelOfFact · 11/09/2014 16:55

I prefer Cushelle. Elle for short.

Uptheairymountain · 11/09/2014 17:12

Going against the majority view - I think it's really, really nice. Pretty and unusual.

mamalino · 11/09/2014 17:19

I think it's lovely. I was obsessed with anything velvet/velveteen when I was growing up in the 80s - velour track suits anyone? I loved the velveteen rabbit book too, and remember The Chalet School girls wearing velvet frocks?

Velvet is an ace name. Go for it!
