Velvet for a baby name?

Hello, I am really loving the name Velvet for a girl. It has lots of lovely connotations for me from childhood being an avid fan of National and International Velvet and The Velveteen Rabbit.

I also love the Pixies song Velouria.

Am I missing something really obvious that will forever condemn future daughter to a life of cringe?

But then I like other names that are ridiculed on MN (like Damson) so I'm probably not the best one to ask

See, with things like this I would go for a nice normal name on paper so the child has a proper name. Then use something like Velvet as a family nickname. That way you don't saddle your child with a horrific name for the rest of their lives.

Baby Velvet is 2 now so probably a bit late for her to change it.

Wonder if we all know the same person named Velvet?

As a child I named a darling kitten Velvet because of her super-soft fur. Cried buckets when she went to her forever home where they called her Amy.

Years later my daughter knew girls at school named Velvet and Silky. They'd be about 30 now.

In Moulin Rouge, Nicole Kidman's character was Satine.

I love all these names!

Well everyone my name is velvet, I like the name very much and many many people etc teachers and parents go to me and explain how much they love my name and how unique it is compare to others , they don’t think of loo roll they think of a material which is good becuz it is soft, I was called it becuz I was soft when I was a baby and ppl don’t make fun of it, they call me velv so overall I would call ur child that, we need more velvets in the world

I like it and am glad to see there are some real-life Velvets! I've long been a fan of both the book and movie of National Velvet so think I've liked the name since childhood, though I've never met one. I also like the sister's name Edwina and the mother Araminty.

You might want a more prosaic middle name she could use instead though in case she grows up mortified by something so different.
