Quite a few un-likes. Including me. Do they cancel out the likes?

specialsubject · 03/09/2014 19:56

another one here for Link Hogthrob, the captain of the Swinetrek.

PIIIGGGGSSS IIIIIINNNN SPPPAAAAAAACCCE!

Strokethefurrywall · 03/09/2014 19:58

Like it but also liked Lincoln for DS1 - ended up giving him another presidential name but still think it's very cool!

fairyteepee · 03/09/2014 20:44

no maggiethemagpie it doesn't i still really like it.

I like it too! Lots of people wouldn't like my son's name but I didn't care either!

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/09/2014 23:36

I find it fascinating that people can forget they're naming a person rather than a dog

OwlCapone · 04/09/2014 07:06

Me too.

Lottiedoubtie · 04/09/2014 07:13

I'm not sure why you're asking if you're not going to change your mind and aren't even surprised that the vast majority think it's ridiculous.

LetticeKnollys · 04/09/2014 07:34

Sorry to make the 'The Missing Link' and 'California Man' people feel old but I had to Google what they were on about and I'm in my early 20s, do you really think that all of the 2014/15 born teenagers will make the connection? Hairspray is also going to be pretty dated by then, although I wouldn't be surprised if Zelda was still going.

As for 'link' also being a commonly used word, it didn't stop people calling their children 'Matt' for all those years, or Mark, Miles, Bob, etc. At least it's not an embarrassing word.

Do it OP, I like it.

fairyteepee · 04/09/2014 15:18

I asked because i was curious for the reaction from strangers. Its also affirmed how much i like it, as i couldn't give a toss that other don't (no offence) . Im going to go for it, thanks for everyones tuppence worth! Smile

So you don't actually care that you are giving your child a name that will make his life slightly more difficult than it would be with a different name? And it will- you must be able to see that from the responses on here,

I just do not understand how people can be so arrogant. You are naming a person in their own right, not an extension of you.

Hakluyt · 04/09/2014 15:38

"Sorry to make the 'The Missing Link' and 'California Man' people feel old but I had to Google what they were on about and I'm in my early 20s"

You had to google "the missing link"? Wow- maybe education has gone downhill......!

RedToothBrush · 04/09/2014 15:39

Fuck everyone else.

Do you like it?

What does it mean to you?

Hakluyt · 04/09/2014 15:41

No- it's not all about you. It's about the person who is going to carry that name for 80 years.

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 04/09/2014 16:15

I see you are going to do it anyway. But I agree. It sounds like you flicked through a dictionary instead of a name book.

It is sweet as a nickname though.

BalloonSlayer · 04/09/2014 16:27

Link is the main character in Stone Cold. A homeless boy who has had a miserable life and it doesn't get any better throughout the book.

Book is used a lot in secondary schools.

It would not be good to be called Link if they were doing that book in school. Have you considered calling him Stanley Yelnats?

OwlCapone · 04/09/2014 17:14

Fuck everyone else.

Including the person who has to live with the stupid name.

RedToothBrush · 04/09/2014 17:54

If it means something to the parents as long as they can explain it to the person with the name then thats it.

You could call a child Geoffrey. But because its a 'real name' thats acceptable.
You could call a child Aoife. Thats acceptable even though loads of people don't know how to pronounce it.
You could call your child Amelia because you like the sound of it, and it goes no deeper than that, and the child has to cope with being 1 of 7 in a class.

Unless it has a nickname which is offensive or rude in someway, then what the heck is 'a stupid name' anyway?

Hakluyt · 04/09/2014 19:35

"If it means something to the parents as long as they can explain it to the person with the name then thats it. "

Yep, that's it. The parents explain it once. The person with the name explains it every single time he tells anyone his name for the next 80 years.

But if you like it, use it. That's all that matters, after all!

fairyteepee · 04/09/2014 20:03

good god i don't see it as a massively out there name and i like to think my son would be able to see that anyone bullying him about a name isn't worth bothering with.

Lincoln is a popular name with Linc as a nickname which people find acceptable but Linc/Link on its own is cruel???

Anyone that doesnt like it, fair enough, i dont like many names.

people that like it, thanks! me too!

Everyone getting all uppity about it, insinuating id be enforcing a 'god awful' name and making his life unnecessarily hard please take your posts to another thread your being quite hysterical.

"good god i don't see it as a massively out there name and i like to think my son would be able to see that anyone bullying him about a name isn't worth bothering with. "

It's not the bullying. I don't think people get bullied because of their names. It's the tedium of explaining every single time you give your name for your entire life.

Bowlersarm · 04/09/2014 20:10

Lincoln is a popular name??

fairyteepee · 04/09/2014 20:12

Redtoothbrush since you asked the reason we like Link is the following:

Having a second child was a big decision after a traumatic birth and miscarriage so my husband said that i could pick a name special to me which is where Link came to mind.

Me and my brother (when we where very young) got a nintendo 64 for christmas (the best christmas ever) and from that day we sat and worked out how to get through the game together. We would always draw each other pictures from legend of zelda, especially me to him as im quite arty.

That game, and character in particular, just represents fond memories of my own sibling relationship that i hope my own children will haveand that why i like it.

OP posts:
fairyteepee · 04/09/2014 20:15

why does he have to explain? my name is link - done. With the names and the fact that people are trying to find more individual names for their children these days (like myself) i dont think Link will get that much of an eye bat by the time he reaches school.

OP posts:
Only1scoop · 04/09/2014 20:21

I clicked on to post expecting to follow your 'link'

Personally think its pretty awful but then you would probably hate names I adore.

You are right by the time 'Link' is in school there will probably be a Trink....Dink....Mink and ....I already know a Mink....

Just don't ever lose him in the park etc....Wink
