Help me name my babe in arms!

I'm sat here feeding my insanely gorgeous 3 day old DS and trying to decide on his name.

It's between Frank and Callan.

Surname is an Irish McC name.

DD is Cassie, named after my great Aunt/surrogate granny (Catherine) who she never got to meet. I lean towards name with familial relevance and my taste is very retro as is DP's.

Frank was my Granda's name. He was a wonderful man who died not long after retiring to spend more time enjoying his grandkids . I know my Mum would be incredibly happy and moved if we name DS in his honour.

I love Frank. It's straightforward and old-fashioned and to me is really quite cool.

Callan is the curve ball. We both really like it but I have a few reservations

Cassie and frank sounds better to me

Although I prefer callan to frank even though I've never heard of callan before!

It'll get misheard as Callum. I hate Callum.

Its too matchy matchy with Cassie?

It's a bit less of a 'proper' name.

I like Cal as a NN.

DS is dark haired and will no doubt grow up to be devilishly handsome and charming if that helps .

Any opinions?

Oh and please don't post to say neither. It's going to be one or the other so not helpful .

Frank Patrick or Callan Francis.

I hate Frank. I think it's old fashioned yes, but grey and dreary, and old man mac-ish.

But he's your child. If it reminds you of your lovely grandpa, then it'll have different connotations to you.

Callan is fine.

Definitely Frank. Callan is too close to the trendy Callum.

Yeah I hate roughly 99% of MN approved names Bowlers so it's swings and roundabouts really .

How about Francis with Frank as a nickname?

It would be just Frank as DD is just Cassie.

Would feel weird to give one a 'what if they become a High Court Judge' name and not the other.

Francis nn Frank is better than just Frank. I prefer Callan though.

Main thing against Callan as a first name is I think it's too matchy IMO.

It's not so much that they're alike scottishmummy just that the untrained ear will hear Callum instead of Callan.

Cassie still gets misheard as Cathy quite a lot .

Frank is great. I so nearly use it but, unlike you, I always felt I had to give the 'Sunday name' too and wasn't sure about Francis. Regretted not using it. (It was also my Irish Grandad's name - my Uncle, as a junior version, was always Frankie Boy!!)

Callan is lovely but, if you are in the UK, you will forever be spelling it or correcting people. (I love the name Callum but they will definitely be confused).

I like Frank more. Callan will spend his life saying that he didn't get that e-mail because it was sent to Callum and he's Callan. On the phone to call centres changing database entries to Callan. Saying "no, with an 'A' N' at the end." (I have a name with the less common in England - but traditional Irish - spelling - this is just from my experience).

Frank is just always F R A N K.

And Frank is a cool name, plus I think it passes the "high court judge" test on it's own - if you were going for "Frankie" I'd tell you to rethink, but Frank works for a little boy, a 20-something chatting up a pretty girl in a bar, for the broad shouldered man leading out the national rugby team, a builder you'd trust to build you a kitchen extension that wouldn't sink and a barriaster to get you off a murder charge you didn't commit - basically, you've got all bases covered!

Also, keep trying out the names when talking to him - one will feel more 'right'. My friend and her husband named their daughter but she kept inadvertently calling her something different so they changed it.

I'm pretty sure he's a Frank Patrick (Patrick was my other granda). I think this thread will just confirm that .

We're going to open a bottle of fizz with dinner and DP and I are going to do a wee toast and officially name him. I expect tears . We have been completely tight lipped about names up to now.

I wouldn't use Frankie. It's a bit twee.

Frank is just Frank. And that's why I love it .

Frank, my grandad is also called Frank, it's a good name :)

Frank....Butcher. Never known one in RL....but it gives be visuals of a coal miner, built like a brick shit house, who goes the pub all the time.

Much prefer Callander.....I like matchie matchie, caddie and Callander is really nice.
