Surely it's very soon?

Where are all these Amelias?! I dont know any!

Shockingundercrackers · 15/08/2014 10:31

I don't know any either. Or Olivers, and I have two under 4s so in and out of nurseries, preschool parties and school visits. ALL. THE. BLOODY. TIME.

Am a little gutted that my boy's name hasn't shot into the top ten. It hadnt even shot into the top 250, which is quite odd because I seem to run into lots of them in sandpits everywhere. Maybe next year...

florascotia · 15/08/2014 10:33

Sorry - Willow (14 places) should also have been on my list of girls' names that have risen most up the Top 100 table.

ToffeeMoon · 15/08/2014 11:00

Could anyone link to the full list ie all names not just top 100? Someone was able to find it last year I recall.

Also, anyone know why it takes them 8 months to work this out? Surely it could be compiled by mid-Jan? Or are they doing it with a pencil, paper and ledger?

RedToothBrush · 15/08/2014 11:04

ToffeeMoon, its probably 8 months, because there are a million and other sets of data to process which equally would be lovely if they could be compiled by mid-Jan. So releases are staggered through the year instead.

burgatroyd · 15/08/2014 11:28

I only know one Amelia. Hmmmmm.....

TheHonourableLady · 15/08/2014 12:04

Toffee - by mid Jan you wouldn't even have all the previous year's names registerd as parents are allowed six weeks. So the data set isn't complete before mid-Feb and then each area has to be collated (there isn't a single national database). As already mentioned there are thousands of annual data sets people want published ASAP so prioritisation is necessary and this data doesn't effect much in terms of public services or the economy so it is not a priority.

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 15/08/2014 12:06

Nevaeh is getting SCARILY close to the Top 100, please STOP this madness!

RedToothBrush · 15/08/2014 12:09

I heartily approve of the 46 boys called Ace and 4 called Awesome.

burgatroyd · 15/08/2014 12:13

If I wanted my son to be called Awesome I'd call him Orson!

ButterflyOfFreedom · 15/08/2014 12:21

I predicted Oliver as number 1!
I said Emily would be number 1 for girls - it's 3rd.
I know one of each though don't know any Amelia's.

Love that 3 boys were called 'Legend'!!

Oxtailchambermaid · 15/08/2014 12:34

Jasper - another posh boy name on the rise and will probably break into the top 100 next year. Up 18 places to number 111. Not that I'm obsessed and cross referencing last years excel tables.

wingcommandergallic · 15/08/2014 12:46

I don't know any Amelias either!

wingcommandergallic · 15/08/2014 12:47

How many years do you have Oxtail?

Fancy referencing Seren for me?

RedToothBrush · 15/08/2014 12:55

wingcommandergallic, have a look at names.darkgreener.com. You can produce a graph for individual names which gives the popularity position and actual number of children born with the name for each year since 1996.

moggle · 15/08/2014 13:01

Pleased that our chosen girl's name for DC1, Eliza, hasn't had a big surge this year, just up a couple of places. The darkgreener link shows a definite levelling off. I was expecting a big jump so am relieved!
Boys names on the cards include Leo and Alexander, both up three places, but much more popular, so that's probably a lot more babies named those names this year. Not in the top 10 still though so am happy.

The name I predict going big in 2013 is Edward, I know five baby Edwards born this year, and most are to be known as Ted...

Sorry, Edward for 2014, not 2013... (checks calendar...)

TheHonourableLady · 15/08/2014 13:23

Can anyone find Nina? It's not top 100 and I can't find it while in my phone.

nasara · 15/08/2014 13:32

Nina is 189th.

So pleased that our chosen boys' name is roughly where it was last year - we nearly went for Oscar, but after realising it was rather popular and then predicting it would probably be in the top 10 this year, I'm glad we found an alternative, as it has risen to 7th from 17th or something like that!

RedToothBrush · 15/08/2014 13:33

Nina - 189th 279 babies in 2013 (176th 291 babies in 2012)

persepolis123 · 15/08/2014 13:34

Nina is 189th

Papyrus02 · 15/08/2014 13:41

RedToothBrush - I was just coming on here to link to the DarkGreener site. It's fab. I wish it had been around when I was naming DD1. Her name is now top 5. Although the number of girls with that name has actually gone down. She's also the only one in a cohort of 90 at school.

Talking of numbers of children with each name as opposed to their ranking is quite interesting. Also this info

www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/vsob1/baby-names--england-and-wales/2013/sty-baby-names.html

is worth a look. I definitely know of more boys with the name Oliver than the name Amelia.
