How many boys called Max do you know?

Hello everyone - this is my first ever mumsnet post :)

We're expecting in September and my husband has always loved the name Max (Maximillian in full) if we have a boy. I really like the name but I've always wanted to avoid turning up to nursery/school and there being lots of other children with the same name. How many boys called Max do you know? (babies and up to 3 years-ish?!)

I've seen the popularity ranks online (Max was 18th in 2013) but I'm not sure how that actually translates to how many children of that name you tend to get in a classroom!

Our favourite girls name doesn't make the top 100 :)

Thanks very much.

I have a 22 year old Max!

No others at prep school, one at senior school and several dogs!

We love it, he likes it and it suits him. Not too unusual, but not millions of them around either.

Getyourflipflopson · 14/07/2014 12:07

I have one! And I know of one at my sons school and two at my old place of work

DeputyPecksBentBeak · 14/07/2014 12:09

One, and he's a lovely little thing

BikeRunSki · 14/07/2014 12:13

1 50 something Maxwell, who actually uses his middle name
1 Max who is 14
1 Max who is 7

affinia · 14/07/2014 12:16

Its much more popular than name lists suggest due to all of the variations and spellings. Its a great name and we know about 6 but prob not typical as have 2 Ds's and they are very sporty so lots of boys in our lives!

More important that you love the name than whether its popular. one of the names we picked I didn't love but was trying to avoid using popular names. Through school and his various clubs DS still socialises with 3 boys with his name so it was a pointless exercise.

Wow! Thanks so much for all the responses! There are some really good points here that I hadn't thought of.

Unless I think of a more unusual name that we both love more, it looks like it's a bit of luck whether there are a few others around in our area or none at all!

I don't know any adults or children called Max.

KristinaM · 14/07/2014 12:35

There are two boys called max at our school of 200 pupils. They are not in the same year

skyeskyeskye · 14/07/2014 12:38

Three aged under 11 in our school of 180 children.

JBrd · 14/07/2014 12:39

I have a Max who is 3 Smile

And I know 3 others of the same age, but none of them live close to us.

If you like the name, go for it!

BlinkingHeck · 14/07/2014 12:41

I have a Max and know a 70+ year old Max and know if a couple others in the small town I live (younger than mine).
When I chose it in 2005 it was no. 72 in the boys list of popular names.

I chose it before I conceived and would've gave bothered me if it'd been no. 1 name.

I did just go for Max rather than maxwell as there was a big brother contestant call Maxwell that year.

Sophronia · 14/07/2014 12:44

I don't know any children called Max but I know two adults with the name.

I think the spelling Maximilian with one l is more usual than Maximillian, so you might want to go with that to avoid spelling issues? Smile

liney80 · 14/07/2014 14:47

Thanks for the tip on spelling it Sophronia - I think that was probably a typo/lack of attention to detail on my part! Our girls name - that I came up with - has just four letters and two syllables so is far simpler :)

We didn't choose a lengthened version - Maxwell reminds me of coffee, and we wanted William as a middle name, which really wouldn't have worked well with the other option! (Although I did tease DH that I had registered him as Maximilian William!).

blueshoes · 14/07/2014 15:03

3 at nursery. None at primary school

Loomineer · 14/07/2014 15:04

No boys but I'm a Max Grin no one calls me my full name. Never met or know of any other max boy or girl.

chaya5738 · 14/07/2014 15:17

I know about five (two in DS's nursery).

It depends where you live. If you go to the Diana playground in Kensington Gardens you will hear that name yelled about 1,000 times in various languages. DS was going to be Max until we went there a few weeks before he was born...

ShovettyMcShovetty · 14/07/2014 15:30

I know 2 (1 x toddler and 1 x adult whose full name is Maximilian I think - he is German). I keep hearing it though so think it is now quite common (as in popular).

Rooners, couldn't agree more about Isabella - such a lovely name, but a tad overused now. I blame effing Twilight, which I hated anyway.

weatherall · 14/07/2014 15:35

2 toddlers

KK called her son max, after a certain max who is now a convicted sex offender so it's not a v positive name to me.

Plus there's Robert maxwell.

With this name there are so many variants that there will be more called max than named so on baby name lists.

If you are in Scotland you can see the top 10 names in your council area which is good for checking local popularity.

Gingerjv · 14/07/2014 16:24

I know only few Maxes. But looking at the statistics of popularity of this name i think in 5 years we will meet hundreds of Maxes each day;-))

ZenNudist · 14/07/2014 16:34

1 3yo plus a few adult maxes.

Good name

kimlo · 14/07/2014 16:44

About 5 the oldest has just turned 2

Mama1980 · 14/07/2014 16:44

3

cairocruiser · 14/07/2014 21:30

I have a teenage Max and when we chose it it wasn't a commonly used name at all, so it's strange to see that it's risen to no.18 now!

Popularity does seem to be peculiar to areas though. Jack was apparently the number 1 boys' names in the UK for 10+ years, yet we have only ever met two. By contrast, another of my sons has four - yes four - Seths in the same class as him! What are the chances?

FWIW I predict that Magnus (nn Gus) will take over from Max in the popularity stakes soon.

Doilooklikeatourist · 14/07/2014 21:35

I know 4
2 of whom are Max William
2 in 20s
1 teenager
1 newborn
