I think it is Aw-ray-lia but mentioned it a friend who said Aw-ree-lia. Just curious...

exactly how Colin Firth says it in Love Actually

JapaneseMargaret · 03/05/2014 04:01

Aw-ray-lia. In other words, the correct way. Beautiful name.

Cezella · 03/05/2014 12:39

Alis

Aur isn't pronounced Or in Welsh- it's really hard to write it down phonetically in English but it sounds nothing like Or!

Hello by the way, we often crop up on any Welsh threads!

I'd probably say "ray" when I first saw Aurelia but can understand why it would be "ree"

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/05/2014 12:50

I know, I didn't express myself well with that one, looking back on it Blush

And hello

Greythorne · 03/05/2014 13:28

The French way is Or-ray-lia

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 03/05/2014 19:44

Aw-ray-lia.

LifeHuh · 03/05/2014 20:00

I'd say Or eelia- same ending as Celia/ Delia. And Ophelia come to that, not thatI know any Ophelias. Are there words in English where 're' is 'ray' ?

florascotia · 03/05/2014 21:11

OP you are approx correct (Ow-ray-lee-ah):

You can hear it here: www.forvo.com/word/aurelia/

squoosh · 03/05/2014 21:24

Alis I prnounce 'awe' as aw and 'or' as ore. Not sure if that makes sense!

So I pronounce Aurelia as Aw-reee-lia.

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/05/2014 21:31

Awe and or definitely sound the same when I say them.

I often end up confusing myself on these threads

I think we say it the same way though squoosh

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/05/2014 21:31

It = Aurelia.

MrsBungle · 03/05/2014 21:37

Awe-ree-lia. Like Marcus Aurelius.

PigletJohn · 03/05/2014 21:49

Oh-reely-ah

beershuffle · 04/05/2014 11:13

Flora, again, there isnt one correct way. Its a multinational name with different valid pronounciations.
Sheesh.

Nowitscleanugobshite · 04/05/2014 14:56

Aurelia to rhyme with Celia. But then I'm
From "norn iron" and we talk very quickly here!!!!! Wouldn't have time for a "Ray" in the middle!!

EvenBetter · 04/05/2014 19:40

I'm from NI too.
Or ee lee ah

Nowitscleanugobshite · 04/05/2014 20:03

Two NI people agreeing! We've got to be "right" then!!

NauseousKitty · 25/05/2014 03:59

Just to let you know, Aurelia (Aw-ree-le-a thanks to DH pronounciation!) Elizabeth was born yesterday. In shock as had assumed she was a boy for some reason!

Thanks for your help ladies!

Lovely name.

Bonnie152 · 25/05/2014 09:34

Definitely your way. Even if that's not the most popular way of pronouncing I think Aurelia (like in love actually) is much prettier Smile

ZenNudist · 25/05/2014 09:51

Your way

AntinousWild · 25/05/2014 09:56

Congratulations. Smile
