Unusual but not made up boys names?

I really don't want to use a top 100 name.

I was one of 5 girls with the same name in my primary school class and one of 6 girls with the same name at secondary and it has really put me off.

However...looking at the lists, it is clear a lot of these names are popular for a reason and a lot of the less popular ones are either completely made up nonsense or just odd.

What I think I'm after is maybe a Victorian or earlier name that used to be classic but has fallen out of favour a bit. ie unusual but still recognisable as an actual name and not totally outlandish

We have a Quentin, which isn't too common. Also like the suggestions of Ivan, Tobias and Thaddeus.

I know a Thaddeus, it is very unusual. And Balthazar was going to be one of my sons names (til DH stuck his oar in)

Ooh and I know a Tobias, he is lovely as well

Top 100 does not mean they are likely to be lots in the class- I say this as someone who teaches/works with multiple groups/ age groups etc and think I see a fair cross section.
If it worries you i'd avoid top 20 - maybe even top 50 but remember that there are so so so many abides horn each year that a top 100 name does not mean you a regular antes to come across another.

My ds's name is top 20 - we have come across a few but none in our social circle- and I have been in schools where there are nine in tw whole school etc.
equally I went to school with two Keirs in one class- beer met another before or after until I taught one for the first item this year. So you can never guarantee it anyway.

Pick a name you like for itself - nt simply because you hope he/she will never meet another - sure be aware of popularity but don't make that te main consideration

That said - Laura was 200 and odd in the charts in 2012 - so unluckily to be many in our children's age group!

Mrs Tamkin, you are right about never being able to guarantee it AND choosing a name we like above all. I also take on board what you say about maybe top 50 being a high enough limit.

I like a lot of the suggestions, thanks.

Particularly I like Quentin, Willoughby (but the cad in Sense & Sensibility connotations put me off) Thadeus (meaning very similar to our favourite girls name), Barnabus, Edmund and Gideon.

Also love a couple of the others but have been used already by us for the name of our late loss and one of our MC'd babies (prefer not to say which)

I think if you actually look at the instances of each of the top names for boys it drops hugely outside of the top ten or so simply because those top names are SO POPULAR!

Swithun was my Grandfather-in-law's name which I love! I also like Blaise.

I was going to say Edmund too. Or you could go all Cold Comfort Farm (not Victorian I know) and go for Bible names - Seth, Reuben, Amos, that kind of thing.

Not Gideon though - I did use to know a lovely Gideon but since George Osborne got that nickname I've gone right off it!

Job? Wasn't he a rather unfortunate person in the Bible??

No idea who Job was in the bible but it was a name used in the 1840-1850
