Unusual but not made up boys names?

I really don't want to use a top 100 name.

I was one of 5 girls with the same name in my primary school class and one of 6 girls with the same name at secondary and it has really put me off.

However...looking at the lists, it is clear a lot of these names are popular for a reason and a lot of the less popular ones are either completely made up nonsense or just odd.

What I think I'm after is maybe a Victorian or earlier name that used to be classic but has fallen out of favour a bit. ie unusual but still recognisable as an actual name and not totally outlandish

Any suggestions gratefully received, thanks!

River

no, Job wasn't unfortunate, but his faith was tested harshly.

he didn't give up praying and believing in God and then was richly rewarded.
it's a wonderful read

I love Tobias ( name on my list, should DD have been a DS!) also Stephen.

Rafael/Raphael nn Rafa for another suggestion

ZingWatermelon · 28/04/2014 21:48

I was going to say Jethro (also Biblical, he was Moses's FIL)

and apart from DS3 I don't know another Michael under the age of 15

I agree there is no guarantee...I very nearly called ds1 milo (pre twenties). There was a milo in his class at infant school and now there are at least three in his year at high school. The name he has was very popular the year he was born, but I think he's the only one in his year at school.

Anyway, I suggest;
Jarvis
Bruce
Hamish
Perry
Angus
Fergus
Dexter
Digby
Seamus
Otis

PeaceLilly snorted tea at the suggestions of kevin, Darren and Garry.

Perhaps not quite what we are looking for but would definitely be an unusual name Grin

Mrs Tamkin no, the lists are helpful thanks. the 1900 census one was great. Not sure why you are on bed rest but hope all is ok Thanks

I think you have all actually given me a long list to think about/talk dh into consisting of:

Quentin,
Thadeus,
Barnabus,
Edmund
Gideon.
Gabriel
Benedict
Casper
Vincent.

I also do love Tobias but link it instantly in my head with Tobias the never-nude in Arrested development Smile

What about Theodore? That's one off our list that is just within the top 100 (number 97 I think) Theo is a nice NN

Armadale · 02/05/2014 18:55

I love Theodore, but we will have a Theodora at some point, hopefully, even if this one turns out to be a boy! (Old family name), so Theodore wouldn't work!
