ELCS today.
Having a baby girl. Need a short easy to spell name but want something unusual and a strong with a mythical or literary link.
Shortlist consists of (after much much discussion):
Hero
Isis
People being very sniffy about both choice but past caring frankly.
Which name do I go with?

Isis or iris

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 01/04/2014 07:46

Not keen on either, sorry. Both would sound a bit pretentious round these parts - but if those are the circles you mix in, go ahead. I can see either girl fitting in well at Marlborough College!

DiscoBiscuits · 01/04/2014 07:49

Ha! We're a bit eccentric.
But definitely not Marlborough fodder!
Huge range of names locally so non issue with them being 'unusual'.

Love love love Hero

Mama1980 · 01/04/2014 07:51

I love both Grin (sorry not helpful)

Isis is the name of Oxford's boat racing crew and craft and Mylene Klass has a Hero doesn't she?

Don't know if that helps any. Good luck with the birth.

Delphiniumsblue · 01/04/2014 07:57

Neither- Iris is better.

moonblues · 01/04/2014 07:58

Hero. :)

CarolineKnappShappey · 01/04/2014 08:00

Depends on your surname. Isis has less if a chance if people taking the piss.

Can you really imagine shouting. "Hero! Hero!" Across the park/ swimming pool/ supermarket.

DiscoBiscuits · 01/04/2014 08:02

Yep.

Hero Smile

BikeRunSki · 01/04/2014 08:04

I love Isis. It was on my list for DD but DH was not keen. As well as it's mythical meanings, it is the old name for the River Thames and is now is now used for the stretch of Thames through Oxford.

Juno?
Gaia?

CorporateRockWhore · 01/04/2014 08:05

Hero is horrific, Isis is beautiful. Done. Grin

Congratulations by the way!

OhNoYouExpedidnt · 01/04/2014 08:06

Love Isis a lot. DH wouldn't let me use it. He sticks to top 10 names.

OhNoYouExpedidnt · 01/04/2014 08:06

Plus we went to Uni in Oxford so was perfect.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 01/04/2014 08:06

Isis.

Or Hera?

grizzabellia · 01/04/2014 08:07

Isis - I know of one Isis and it does not seem to raise too many eyebrows. Hero is much harder to live up to and whether you like it or not will seem masculine to many people not aware of the myth and odd for a girl.

Iris is way better than either though. Or what about Hebe?

EasyCompadre · 01/04/2014 08:08

Isis is lovely, I really like it.
My favourite mythical name is Aurora, but DP is far too straight-laced and won't even entertain it :(

Littlegreenburger · 01/04/2014 08:08

Isis not iris if you want to be different there's tons round here

ThatBloodyWoman · 01/04/2014 08:10

Isis.

Happy Birthday Little Girl.

Take care of yourself Disco.

HyvaPaiva · 01/04/2014 08:11

Isis. It's very lovely.

Hero is ridiculously awful, sorry.

ThatBloodyWoman · 01/04/2014 08:15

If it's a choice of two names - perhaps wait until you meet her?

mummybare · 01/04/2014 08:17

Congratulations! I vote Isis - lovely name :)

ThatBloodyWoman · 01/04/2014 08:18

I've just looked it up and Isis is Egyptian, and one interpretation is Goddess of the sky and nature.

Very fitting for a Spring baby I think.

Felyne · 01/04/2014 08:28

I'd go with Isis, although some people might think it's supposed to be Iris. How about Hera?
Congratulations!
